Garden Checklist: Pruning tips to encourage sturdy growth
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local garden- ers who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
"I try to rely less and less on controlling na- ture. Instead I am learn- ing to live with its chaos," a quote by Mas Masu- moto is the inspiration for this week's Garden Checklist.
Tasks for this time of year include monitoring fruiting pear and apple
trees for codling moth. To control powdery mildew on grapevines, apply sulfur every 14 days until fruit begins to taste sweet. Do not treat if temperature exceeds
100°F.
When using herbi-
cides for weed control, spray on a calm day and protect plants by shield- ing with a large piece of cardboard.
When pruning, re- member to pinch back annuals and perenni- als to encourage sturdy growth.
When fertilizing, take
note that yellow leaves may be a sign of chloro- sis, which can be treated with chelated iron.
Spring planting sea- son is now over. Keep recent plantings well- watered.
Postpone planting non-essential annual flowers, vegetables and container plants until fall.
Enjoy these now; an- nuals and perennials: cosmos, dahlia, foxglove (Digitalis), coneflower (Echinacea).
Bulbs, corms, tubers: watsonia.
Trees, shrubs, vines: chitalpa, clematis, escal- lonia.
Fruits and vegetables: nectarine, peach, plum.
Things to ponder for this time of year, remem- bet that spider mites can be managed by rinsing dust from foliage
To water hillsides, set emitters on the upper side of slope.

he said. “It’s nice seeing them and knowing that they are all okay.”
As for graduation plans, Goertzen said they are still hoping to go through with a cer- emony.
“For us, our families
don’t want to do virtual, they don’t want to get together like that,” said Goertzen. “They don’t want a pre-recording or a recorded graduation, so we’re still holding out hope.”
He said if a live cer- emony were to take place, it would likely happen in late June or July.
