For the second straight season, the Reedley High Pirates were the class of the field at the Parlier girls Basketball Tournament.
The Pirates (12-4) capped a dominating three-day tourney run with a 52-17 dismantling of the Tranquillity High Tigers on Jan. 4. That fol- lowed a 46-25 semifinal win over Fowler High on Jan. 3 and an opening 59- 7 rout of Minarets High on Jan. 2
Senior Abby Delport scored 11 points in the finals win over Tranquil- lity and adeptly ran the point guard position in place of injured Precious Hawkins on her way to capturing tournament Most Valuable Player honors. That included 10
points and a number of assists against Fowler; a rematch of the 2018 Parlier tourney finals and the Pirates’ closest game in the tournament.
“I thought Abby played really well for us at the point guard position,” Pirates coach Matthew Wilkinson said. “She was able to create opportunities for her teammates on the offen- sive end, while being a spark on the defensive side. We are excited and confident to see Abby continue to embrace her role in the position as we approach the toughest part of our season.”
Joining Delport on the all-tourney team were RHS teammates Madi- son Haney and Miah Paz. Sophomore Paz scored a game-high 15 points in the win over Fowler
and added a game-high 23 points in the rout of Minarets before leading the way with 19 points against Tranquillity. Se- nior center Haney added 17 points against Mina- rets, nine versus Fowler and 11 against Tranquil- lity while demonstrating a strong inside presence.
The Parlier tour- nament was a strong bounce-back for Reedley, which dropped its final three games at the Di- nuba-Orosi Tournament before Christmas. It also gave the Pirates momen- tum heading into a Jan. 7 non-league home game against Tulare Western (results were unavailable at press time).
Reedley’s final tuneup before North Yosemite League play is Saturday, Jan. 11, at Dinuba High in a scheduled 3:30 p.m.
