know in this weather
Our daytime temperature has climbed above 100 degrees every day since July 6.
The record for consecutive 100-degree days in Sanger is 21, a mark that will likely be tied today and broken tomorow.
The heat wave has caused the agency that controls the state power grid to issue a "flex alert." That means the California Independent System Operator is calling for voluntary elec- tricity conservation from 5 to 9 p.m. You are being asked to set your air conditioner's thermo- stat to 78 degrees or higher and not to use other appliances during peak hours.
If you or someone you know has to be outside in this weather it's good to know the differ- ence between heat exhaustion and heat stroke and the proper response to both.

It's hot, humid and the air is mixed with soot and smoke from grass and forest fires.
It's pretty much a normal summer here in the Valley.
The smoke is coming from at least two ongoing forest fires and numerous off and on dry grass fires. It can cause headaches and irritate lungs and airways, aggravatingconditionssuch as asthma and chronic bron- chitis.
There are several ways to
beat the heat:
• there's a cooling center
at the city annex, 1789 Jen- sen Ave.;
• adults 55 and older can drop in at the senior center, 730 Recreation Ave. from
7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday;
• the Sanger community pool is now open; and,
• the"spraypark"atJFK Park is great fun for young- sters.
