completed a Rodriguez to tie the game at 21.
“The fumble return for a touchdown caused by Juan Flores and pick up by Aidan really sparked us and got us back in the game,” White said.
Ward noted he talked to his team at halftime about the turnovers.
“They got 14 points off of our turnovers and I told my kids you can’t turn the ball over,” he said. “That gave them the short field.”
In the second half, Caruthers running back Bobby Staley scored his third TD of the game on a 14 yard run to regain the lead, 27-21. Orosi re- sponded with a quick strike as Lara connected on a 53-yard pass play to Rodriguez as the Cardi- nals took their only lead of the game, 28-27.
Ward said Orosi’s pass- ing game caught the Blue Raiders off-guard as their defense was keyed on stopping running back Dominic Martinez, who entered the game as one of the section leaders in touchdowns.
running the ball,” said coach. “But they did a really good job throwing the ball. That’s a potent offense.”
Caruthers bounced back and pieced together a 10-play, 60 yard scor- ing that chewed up six minutes off the clock as Babb scored on a short 2-yard run. The Blue Raiders converted a two- point play for a 35-28 lead. After a quick three and out by Orosi, Caruthers continued to rely on their rushing attack as they ex- tended their lead to 41-27 on a 3-yard run by Gus- tavo Arciga.
Behind the arm of Lara, who finished the game completing 16 of 24 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns, the Cardinals would drive to Caruthers’ 27 yard line. Facing a 4th and 15 with less than 5 minutes re- maining, Lara found wide receiver Bryan Chavez, who broke free from the Blue Raiders coverage to haul in a pass to pull the Cardinals within a touch- down, 41-35.
Orosi’s defense needed a stop to give the offense a shot to knock off Ca- ruthers. The Blue Raid- ers held on to the ball converting a key 4th and

Orosi High's Dominic Martinez breaks free for a big run during the first half of the Cardinal's matchup with Caruthers on Sept. 27. The junior tailback, normally a big offensive threat, was held to just 73 yards on 11 carries and was kept out of the end zone for the first time this season as Orosi fell to the Blue Raiders in their opening league game, 42-35.
“Their strong suit is
2 from the 16-yard line with less than 2 minutes remaining eventually run- ning the clock out.
“Their size and strength wore us down in the 4th quarter,” White said. “They have the #1 team in Div. 5 for a rea- son. They have the best offensive line we have seen all year. They were
able to run behind them at will for most of the game. We threw everything at them, but it still wasn’t enough.”
Martinez was held without a TD for the first time this season as the junior finished with 73 yards on 11 carries.
Caruthers opened the game with a 70-yard TD
run by Jake Prudek and later tacked on a scor- ing run by Staley before Orosi got on the board on a scoring run by Arciga. The Blue Raiders did all their damage on the ground as they racked up 360 yards.
Leading the way de- fensively for the Car- dinals was Arciga who
led the team with seven tackles and assisted on three others. Meraz added seven tackles while Ed- gar Dominguez finished with six. Rodriguez was perfect converting all his PAT’s as the Cardinals will now travel to face River- dale tomorrow night. The Cowboys are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in ESL play.
