Cortez commits to the Mustangs
DHS wrestling coach Michael Wright was thrilled for Cortez.
“We are very happy and proud of Noah,” said coach Michael Wright. “Cal Poly was his dream school and he made it a reality. This is big for our program. It shows that if you get good grades and work hard you can accomplish your goals anywhere. It shows that we can get it done right here in Dinuba.”
Wright said Cortez has the grades and SAT scores and as soon as those became available, he made the call to the Mustangs’ head coach Jon Sioredes.

Vincent Carrillo of Independence. Cristian Esquivel came very close to adding another title for the Emperors but dropped a hard fought 4-2 decision to Wrayan Ayala. Esquivel had posted a 10-2 win over Robert Brooks of Lemoore and a pin against Trace Silvia of Kerman. The senior began the ivitational with a 8-3 decision over Alexi
Olea of Lindsay.
Junior Jassur Karyorv pinned Felix
Vargas of Garces to win third place at 132. Earlier in the day, Karyorv opened with a pin against Arturo Sanchez of Mt. Whitney and then faced Manny Jaramillo of Selma where he suffered a loss to the eventual champion. Karyorv then pinned Leon Belman of Westmont
At 220, Javier Martinez also placed third. Martinez had pinned Rafael Carvajal of Atwater after a loss to Nathan Enriquez of Independence. Martinez had pinned Jerry Rodriguez of Parlier and Oscar Cerda of Edison.
Adrian Garcia also took fifth place at 138 and teammate Jose Figueroa was sixth at 106.
Coach Michael Wright noted the girls also were in action on Friday and Isamar Bertado was second overall at 170.
Dinuba will be hosting its annual invitational that begins Friday and concludes on Saturday.
There will be over 50 teams taking part, according to Wright.

Dinuba High School’s Noah Cortez became the second Division 1 wrestler after the junior standout announced his verbal commitment with Cal Poly.
Cortez is a two-time state qualifier and this past season he placed eighth at 145. He is currently ranked among the state’s best this season.
Cortez said Cal Poly has always been his school of choice.
“Cal Poly has always been the school for me,” Cortez said. “I just couldn’t pass it up. It felt right for me and it’s next to the beach.”

Dinuba High sophomore wrestler Matt Montalvo pinned Bobby Campos to win the 120 pound title Thursday in the Deliddo Invitational in Lemoore.
Montalvo reached the final with a close 2-1 win over Rodrigo Lopez of Wasco. That match was a complete reversal of his 17-2 win over Roberto Campos of Farmersville. Montalvo
opened the day with a 2-0 win against before facing Vargas.

Dinuba  nishes third overall at the Polly Wilhelmsen tournament

A 16-0 run in the fourth quarter sealed the fate of Granite Hills as the Dinuba High boys basketball team wrapped up the year by winning the third place game of the 68th Annual Poly Wilhelmsen Tournament in Visalia on Saturday night, 72-58.
The win improves DHS to 14-3 overall heading into a Central Sequoia League game tomorrow night against Immanuel.
Senior forward Luke Rodriguez scored nine of his team-high 22 points during the scoring run and guard Sebastian Garza finished with 20.
Rodriguez was named to the all- tournament team for the Emperors.
In a semifinals game against Edison on Friday, the Tigers jumped out to a 35-19 halftime lead and went on to defeat the Emperors, 58-48.
Rodriguez paced DHS with a team- high 17 points.
On Thursday night, Dinuba turned the tables on Hanford West in 69-35 win. The two teams met back on Dec. as the Huskies prevailed, 60-50.
Rodriguez and Josh Magaña each scored 15 points.
The Emperors outscored Hanford West 21-10 in the first quarter and closed the game out with a 21-7 advantage.
In the opener, Dinuba had no problems with Tulare as the Emperors cruised to a 64-26 win. Magaña had a game-high 18.

Dinuba High senior defensive player Joshua Sanchez had quite a season for the Emperors. Sanchez totaled 74 tackles, 13 sacks, an interception, blocked punt and a forced fumble and his biggest season didn’t go unnoticed as he was named the Central Sequoia League’s Most Valuable Player.
Linebacker Daniel Long and defensive back Brian Campbell were first-teamers.
while Campbell recorded 60 tackles, two interceptions, six pass deflection. Campbell also saw action on offense with eight passes for 248 yards as a wide receiver and was a kick/punt return specialist with just under 379 yards.
Dinuba also had the Offensive Player of the Year in quarterback Josh Magaña. Magaña threw for 2,472 yards on 160 of 274 attempts with 31 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Senior offensive
selection blocking for Magana. Wide receiver Jacob Huerta, was also a first- team pick after catching 32 passes for 681 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior tight end Jonathan Calderon was a CSL first teamer finishing the season with 512 yards on 35 receptions and eight TD’s.
Kicker Christian Hernandez made the first-team as the senior made 4 of 5 field goals and 54 of 61 on PAT’s.

The Orosi High backfield of senior running back Jerry Huerta and junior fullback Freddi Arciga proved to be a major headache for opposing defenses.
The Cardinals’ were recently selected
to the West Sequoia League first team. They were joined by junior offensive lineman Victor Rosales and senior linebacker Ismael Perez.
Huerta, who averaged nearly 145 yards a game, led the team with 1,451 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns on
203 carries. Arciga ended the season rushing for 573 yards and seven touchdowns and also was a second team selection as a linebacker.
