Fund drive raises $286K for Community Food Bank
Contributed
Reedley-based Gar Tootelian, Inc. this week successfully capped off its Feeding Families Fund Drive for 2017.
The agricultural retailer present- ed a check for $286,495.50 on Dec. 27 to the Community Food Bank in a brief ceremony at the Butler Pente-
costal Church of God’s Neighborhood Market in Fresno. The fourth annu- al event in September raised about $190,000 and Gar Tootelian matched 50 cents on the dollar for all dona- tions from the public to account for the total donation.
The money will go to provide more than two million meals to hun- gry residents of Central California.
Karen Musson, managing partner at Gar Tootelian, praised Central Cali- fornia residents for their willingness to donate.
“Every year, people dig a little deeper to help give hope to families struggling with hunger,” Musson said. “Our thanks to all the generous donors who participated in GAR’s Fourth Annual Feeding Families Fund
drive. It is truly inspiring to be part of a community that is so generous.” The daylong food drive has been
held in September as a combined event featuring Gar Tootelian, the Community Food Bank, KMJ Radio, KMPH television and The Market. Money was raised to give hope to Valley residents recovering from wildfire losses and children strug-
gling with hunger.
Three unexpected donations of
$10,000 each enabled the fund drive to surpass the 2016 total. During its four years, the event has raised more than $650,000 and provided nearly five million meals.
In October, Gar Tootelian was named the 2017 Community Food Bank Donor of the Year for its effort.

FIRES

Fire investigators found severed electrical wiring in the attic that caused a ceiling beam to smolder and ignite. Firefighters put out the blaze within 30 minute after reach- ing the attic.
Damage was limited to a small area above a bedroom, fire officials said.
A total of 15 firefighters and rescue personnel were on scene at the Christmas Day fire, RFD officials said. The blaze temporarily displaced five occupants.
There were no injuries in either fire, officials said. The department reminds people that the fires are good re- minders that carbon monox- ide alarms and smoke alarms save lives.

Reedley College raised $4,500 during its 1920s-themed Gatsby Gala dinner at the college’s student center on Dec. 9. About 100 attendees dined, enjoyed music and games while dressed in period outfits reflecting the novel, “The Great Gatsby.” Funds from the event went to the college’s Center for Fine & Performing Arts project.
