Crash near Orange Cove kills 18-year-old Reedley man
MVT Staff Report
A two-vehicle crash Aug. 6 just south of Orange Cove claimed the life of an 18-year- old Reedley man and injured another man.
The Fresno County Coro- ner's office identified the victim as Hugo Hernandez. According to the California
Highway Patrol, Hernandez was driving a black 2009 Hon- da Accord south on Jacobs Av- enue at about 5 p.m. when he entered the intersection into the path of a westbound silver 2017 Honda Accord driven by Guillermo M. Garcia, 32, of Orange Cove. Garcia tried to avoid a collision but was un- able to stop before striking
the driver side door of the black Honda, according to the CHP.
The impact of the collision sent both vehicles veering southwest and crashing into a wood utility pole. The black Honda became engulfed in fire because of the crash.
Garcia was able to exit his vehicle on his own, CHP
reported, but Hernandez suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Garcia was transported by ambulance to Adventist Medi- cal Center with minor inju- ries. Both drivers were wear- ing seat belts, which CHP said greatly reduced injuries to Garcia.
At the time of the accident, the CHP hadn't determined if Hernandez had stopped at the intersection, which has posted stop signs for traffic on Ja- cobs Avenue.
CHP officials don't believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision. An in- vestigation into the accident is ongoing.
