young team. We have a lot of inexperienced young players.”
Determining what team came out ahead was next to impossible because no touchdown makes it to the score- board and possession is regulated to give both teams time to make full use of their rosters. For an indicator, Sanger run- ning backs coach Abel Gallardo remained un- characteristically calm during the match.

Pena, too. “We’re un- der the lights,” he said. “And it’s on. It’s going to be an emotional game. We’ve got to be on.”
Dolce Calandra, one of the senior leaders this year, intercepted a pass intended for a Rangers’ receiver and ran for a touchdown. The crowd, small by Sanger stan- dards, went wild as did the Apaches on the side- line.
“I’ve got a whole team behind me,” Calandra said after the competi- tion. “Whole team, whole town. I see big things for this team.”
Quarterback Noel Col- lazo said the team still has things to work on. “We’ll

get better as the season goes on,” he said. “We’ve got to nip the little things in the bud.” His brother Noah, from the champion- ship 2016 team, had just returned from practice at Reedley College and watched from the sideline. He said his team was do- ing the same thing, “shak- ing the rust off.”
Sanger did much of the same.
Wide receiver Jose Lu- nar, who moved up from junior varsity, said the Apaches this year have a lot of potential. “We have to grow,” he said. “Get bet- ter as a team. We just need to come together. Once we do and make the big plays, that’s what gets the team fired up, makes the ener-

gy to keep everything go- ing play after play.”
Jude Groft, a lineman from last year’s team, also showed up to watch. He heads to Cal Poly in September. He said it’s difficult to tell how good Redwood was compared to last year “because we just flattened them.”
Sanger had bright spots. Assistant coach Jeremiah Toma cheered a couple times, once when Noel Callazo ran the ball into the end zone. Run- ning back Morgan Privett showed he’ll be one to watch.
And Jamarie Jenkins, who was one of the bigger players on the field, gained a significant amount of size since last season. “We

Reedley’s Pirates are expected to be ready for their historic rivals. Sanger offensive line coach Steve Villagomez said his Apaches would be ready.
“It’s war when you hit the field,” Toma said in the locker room. “If you’re not going full speed, you’re go- ing to get somebody else hurt on your team.”

MVT staff report
Former Fresno City College and Dinuba High wrestling standout, Isaiah Perez, committed to wrestle for Fresno State earlier last week. He will be the second Emperor to be a Bulldog, joining ex-teammate Jacob Wright, who wrapped up his freshman season.
“We are really proud of Isaiah,” said Dinuba High head wrestling coach Michael Wright. “He has
worked hard since he was a little kid for this moment and I am so happy for him that he is going to Fresno State. This is where he wanted to go all along and I know they are happy to have someone who wants to be there as well.”
Perez is a two-time California Community College Athletic As- sociation state champion at 133 pounds. He is a two-time Junior College All-American as he helped the Rams win a third consecutive
state title and the programs 16th overall. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Wrestler last year.
Perez has been wrestling since he was just a boy. At Dinuba High, Perez was a three-time California Interscholastic Federation state medalist and a section champion in his weight class.
Said Wright, “Isaiah is showing our community that through hard work and perseverance you can achieve your goals.”
