Swede Johnson
March 30, 1932 — May 5, 2019
Swede Johnson, 87, died peacefully on the hospice floor of Novant Health Mat- thews Medical Center on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 8:30 PM surrounded by family and friends.
Richard Oscar “Swede” Johnson was born at the family home on P Street in Sanger, CA on March 30, 1932. The home was recog- nized for the beautiful flowers tended by his mother, Matil- da. She was a nurse.
His father, Ted, was a WPA bridge builder. They raised chickens in their backyard. At age four, he was joined by his sister Jeanette Marie John- son, with whom he remained close throughout his life.
Swede is a graduate of Sanger High School where he earned varsity letters in basketball and baseball. Be- loved by his teammates, Swede recorded a timely “hit” in the bottom of the 9th inning which helped secure a victory for the Apaches in the 1950 Valley Champion- ship game. In 2010, the 1950 Apaches were inducted into the Fresno County Hall of Fame. That team was also in- ducted into the Sanger High School Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this month.
From 1951-1955 Swede served in Korea as a chap- lain’s assistant with the U.S. Air Force. In 1953, he earned a Good Conduct Medal for his service. During four years in the service, he corresponded with Marilyn Andersen from Parlier, CA. Swede and Mari- lyn were married upon his re-
turn from Korea in October of 1955. They were married for 59 years. In 1956, their only daughter Nancy Theressa was born.
The family moved from Sanger to Fresno in 1960.
With an infectious smile and kindness, Swede was a decorated salesman for Mother’s Cookies Company based in Oakland, CA for 30 years. After his retirement, Swede worked for several years with the Fresno County Better Business Bureau and the Business Journal. During the 1990’s Swede and Mari- lyn hosted many travel tours both in the US and abroad through Clovis Travel.
Swede and Marilyn were long-time members of Hope Lutheran Church in Fresno, CA. In 2001, Swede and Marilyn moved to the Central Coast.
Residing in Oceano, the couple enjoyed exploring lo- cal cultural activities. Togeth- er they volunteered for sev- eral years at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Ar- royo Grande. Swede loved working in his garden where he kept beautiful flowers and his volunteer work at Dig- nity Health - Arroyo Grande Community Hospital. Swede always kept his doors open as he entertained friends and family from the San Joaquin Valley who sought coastal ref- uge.
In January 2018, Swede relocated to Charlotte, NC to be present for Sunday Dinner with family. He was a mem- ber of Morning Star Lutheran
Church in Matthews, NC. Later in life, Swede devel- oped a special appreciation for Southern cuisine - espe- cially fried chicken, sweet tea, and biscuits.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, who passed away in 2014. Sister, Jen- eatte Marie Peckfelder also passed away earlier this year. He is survived by his daugh- ter Nancy and husband Doug Ownby of Charlotte, NC; grandson Vincent, his wife Naomi, and great-grand- daughter Leona of Apex, NC; step granddaughters Emily Ownby; Anne Beavers and her husband Drew, and their children Emilia and Na- than. Swede also leaves be- hind sister-in-law Daisy Lee Bitter of Homer, AK. And he is survived by six nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held on Friday May 17 at 11:00 a.m. in the Morning Star Lutheran Chapel 12900 Idlewild Road, Matthews, N.C. 28105. Visi- tation at 10:00 a.m.

Winifred Arlene Bretz
Winifred Arlene Bretz passed away on May 6, 2019 at the age of 98. Win- nie was born and raised in Del Rey, the only child of Alex & Mary Cole- man. She married into the Bretz family in 1941; she and Verne shared 61 wonderful years rais- ing their three children: Vernon Lee, Lynn Margaret, and Kevin William. After Dad retired, their grandchildren stole all their atten- tion. Lynn & Tom’s children, Jer- emy, Jonathan and Jad, and Kevin’s son, Forrest, were the highlights of their lives. Mom and Dad were inseparable until his death in 2002. She moved into a senior living village and eventually into an
assisted living facility where she spent her last days.
Her beautiful spirit shines through her entire family which was so blessed to share so many years and memories with her. Her great grandchildren cherish all she did with them and will continue to carry on her traditions of baking pies, making
cinnamon rolls and loving their families above all else. Winnie was predeceased by her husband, Verne, and her son, Vernon Lee. She leaves behind her daughter and son- in-law, Lynn and Tom, her son Kevin, Vernon’s partner of 26 years Gail Langevin, her grandchildren Jeremy, Jonathan, Jad and Forrest, and her adoring great grandchildren. love of life will shine on through her family.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Method-
ist Church, 1612 9th Street, Sanger, CA on Saturday June 1, 2019 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Winnie’s name to the Sanger First United Methodist Church
