lard), entered last Tues- day’s game undefeated (4-0) in league play and came out shooting the lights out. San Joaquin shot 69 percent from the field in the first half, putting up NBA num- bers, as they were able to take a 25-point lead into halftime, 51-26.
Leading the Pan- thers in scoring was sophomore shooting- guard Joseph Hunter, who finished the game with 25 points, seven re- bounds and four assists. Panthers’ Jaden Geron pitched in 15 points while Devin Newsome added 16.
Prior to Tuesday night’s matchups, the Panthers remained un- defeated in league play (6-0).
Sanger’s Jon Dillon led the Apaches in scor- ing, as the sophomore ended the night with 19 points, three rebounds and three assists. Fresh- man Kaleb Cole had 11 points and seven re- bounds.
According to Sanger High historian and stat- istician Ron Blackwood, the 95 points put up by San Joaquin Memo- rial matched the most ever scored against the Apaches. Fowler High also scored 95 points against Sanger in 1975. In that game, however, the Apaches came out on top, 97-95.
The Apaches dropped their second game in a row on Friday, Jan. 31, in a rematch against Edison. Sanger fell to the Tigers on Jan.

Friday’s game was also a close one.
Though the Apach- es started off slow, the team made up ground in the second half, particu- larly in the fourth quar- ter when Luke Dillon and brother Jon orches- trated a 23-point quarter.
Down by four points in the final seconds of the game, J. Dillon hit a three-pointer with just 12 seconds remaining to draw within one point of the Tigers. Sanger was able to get the ball back in the final seconds, but a last-ditch effort shot with about two seconds remaining fell short, giving Edison the 59-58 victory.
J. Dillon finished with 27 points to lead all scorers. He also added 10 rebounds to give him a double-double for the night. L. Dillon finished with 15 points, six re- bounds and three as- sists.

Augie Villarreal eclipsed the 1,000 career points scoring mark for Reedley High basket- ball, but the Pirate boys dropped games to North Yosemite League leader Roosevelt High and sec- ond place Hoover High last week.
Villarreal, a four- year member of varsity and three-year starter, reached the milestone in an 80-53 loss to the Patri- ots on Jan. 28, and added more points in a 75-45 set- back against the Rough Riders in Fresno on Jan. 30. Reedley (13-9, 1-5 NYL) has lost seven of its last eight games entering the Feb. 4 home contest against McLane.
Hoover junior Jamar Bowers torched Reed- ley for 24 points, five re- bounds and four steals. The visitors took com- mand early, with fresh- man guard Z.J. Cotton scoring 17 points and dish- ing off four assists while

Reedley hosts Fresno High at 6:30 p.m. Thurs- day, Feb. 6, as they at- tempt to avenge a 39-point loss to the Warriors in the first round. The Pirates then travel to Hoover Monday, Feb. 10, at 6:30 p.m. before closing the league season at home on Senior Night against Sun- nyside on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The Pirates will try to sweep the season series against the Wild- cats in the 6:30 p.m. con- test.

MVT Staff Report
The Reedley High girls basket- ball team entered last week in a three-way tie for first place in the North Yosemite League. But lop- sided losses to fellow league lead- ers Hoover High and Roosevelt High and a major injury to leading scorer Miah Paz have the Pirates refocusing their postseason goals.
Reedley shot just 28 percent from the field and committed an eye-popping 39 turnovers in a 65- 38 loss in Fresno to the Patriots on Jan. 29. That was followed by a 54-27 pounding at the hands of the Rough Riders on Jan. 31 at Reedley High gym; the third loss in as ma- ny meetings against Roosevelt this season. That dropped the Pirates (17-7, 3-3 NYL) two games out of first with just four games remain- ing — three of them on the road.
But even more deflating was the loss of Paz early in the third quar- ter against Roosevelt when she suf- fered a severe concussion. It’s an injury that could sideline the star
sophomore (averaging 20 points per game) for the remainder of the season
Coming off a stirring comeback victory over Sunnyside on Jan. 24, Reedley was on a run of eight wins in nine games entering the showdown with Hoover. But the Patriots jumped to a six-point lead after one quarter, then took com- mand with a 20-11 run in the second quarter to grab a 15-point halftime lead. Spurred by strong defensive pressure and the scoring of senior guard Daeja Holmes (game-high 24 points), Hoover extended the lead and held the Pirates to just 17 points during the final 16 minutes.
Senior Madison Haney led Reed- ley with 14 points, 14 rebounds and three assists. But Paz was limited to 3 of 11 shooting and 12 points. The remainder of the roster finished with just 12 points, led by senior Daniela Gomez with seven points and four rebounds.
Hoover’s Holmes, meanwhile, was supported in the scoring col- umn by juniors Sariya Harris
(18 points) and Aajah Slocum (14 points).
The setback put Reedley in a must-win situation against Roos- evelt, but the Pirates were taken out early by a suffocating Rough Riders defense that limited them to nine first half-points. Entering the second half up 18 points, the visi- tors put it away by going on a 22-9 blitz in the third quarter against a Reedley team jolted by the loss of Paz. Haney led the team in scoring with 12 points.
Reedley has road games sched- uled this week; first against McLane High (Feb. 5) and then at Fresno High (Friday, Feb. 7, in a 6:30 p.m. start). The Pirates beat both teams at RHS, downing the Warriors 56-39 and drubbing the Highlanders by a 59-17 score.
The NYL home finale will be played at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in a rematch with Hoover. The Pirates then closed out the regu- lar season on Thursday, Feb. 13, in a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Sunnyside High.
