The city of Dinuba was recently recognized for two completed projects at the 9th annual LocalMotion Awards Luncheon held on Jan. 23 at the Edison Energy Education Center in Tulare.
The awards banquet is put on by the Tulare County As- sociation of Governments and honors projects, citizens, pub- lic officials and plans that have contributed to transportation planning in Tulare County.
The Dinuba Green Median Improvements Project earned recognition in the Outstanding Transportation Beautification Project category. This is a new category for TCAG. It is given to a beautification project that highlights and improves the scenic and unique ecological characteristics found in Tu- lare County through landscape, structural aesthetics and de- sign concepts: corridor beauti- fication/landscaping, commu- nity identifier, corridor them, or debris clean-up program.
The median project was born from the vision of City Council and staff to beautify the medians along El Monte Way and South Alta Avenue in the City of Dinuba. Assistant City Manager, Daniel James applied for, and was awarded grant funding, from the Envi-

ronmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program (EEMP) which was established by California Natural Resources Agency.
The project scope included removing the existing stamped concrete medians which were replaced with medians con- taining hardscape and native, drought-tolerant plants and trees. This addition not only beautified the main arterial entrances into the community, it also helps to reduce the en- vironmental impacts of trans- portation in and around these areas through the carbon se- questration which the new plants provide. The green me-
dians will also have the benefit of addressing consumption of natural resources and energy by reducing the heat island ef- fect through less concrete in the roadway. The project will provide visual and environmen- tal benefits for years to come.
“What’s special for the me- dian award, this is the first year and we’re the first recipi- ent,” said James.
Roosevelt Paseo earned rec- ognition in the Bike/Pedestrian Project category, which is giv- en awarded to projects that im- proves walkability, connectiv- ity, and/or access for bicyclists and pedestrians. The Roosevelt Paseo is located along the south
side of Roosevelt Elementary School from Euclid Avenue to Viscaya Parkway. The city was successful in obtaining an allo- cation of $200,000 in bike and pedestrian funding through Measure R to perform grad- ing and construction of a 10 foot wide meandering concrete sidewalk. With the completion of this project, residents and students living in Viscaya and the surrounding residential neighborhoods no longer need to walk on an unimproved dirt pathway to and from Roosevelt Elementary School.
“All the departments came together to make this happen,” said James.
