City recognizes Fire Prevention Week
Staff Report
Three members of Reed- ley Fire Explorers Post 57 read proclamations to the Reedley City Council; declar- ing the week of Oct. 7-13 as Fire Prevention Week.
During the Sept. 25 regu- lar meeting, Fire Explorers Chantel Sanchez, Gabriel Her- nandez and Elias Ceja each read a portion of the procla- mation that was finished by Mayor Anita Betancourt.
Sanchez, Hernandez and Ceja read statistics showing that 2,735 people died from home fires across the country in 2016. Fire departments in the U.S. responded to 352,000 home fires during that period.
GERAWAN Continued from page A1
Jesse Rojas, a spokesman for Pick Justice, called the certification a “historic and huge victory” for Gerawan employees.
“We are thankful that the ALRB finally did the right thing after five years of sup- pressing workers rights,” he said. “Pick Justice is just getting started and will con- tinue to advocate for what is right.”
The ALRB earlier had claimed that Gerawan en- gaged in several unlawful acts before the 2013 election, including allegations of pro- viding unlawful assistance to the circulation of the decerti- fication petition.

Staff Report
Blanca Santana became the first female to win Coach of the Year honors for the Reedley Community Services Department’s recreation divi- sion.
Santana was honored with a plaque and recognition at the Sept. 25 Reedley City Council meeting. Ruben Cas- taneda Jr., recreation coor- dinator for Community Ser- vices, introduced Santana — who has coached five years with youth sports programs
— to the council.
“Blanca has been coach-
ing our girls volleyball pro- gram and has been a great role model for the girls,” Castaneda said. “She has also been a coach for our junior cagers program.
“That program has been a little bit more fast-paced, so you need a coach that keep the cool when the pace is go- ing fast. Blanca has been able to keep her cool under tough conditions.”
Castaneda also praised Santana for her work with
the Junior Giants program. “Blanca has been a great coach and a great role model for the youth of our city,” he
said.

Eileen Faye Moore
October 17,1931 - September 19, 2018
Eileen Moore, also known as Grandma Eileen, Mom, Aunt Eileen, and
Einie passed away on September 19, 2018. She was born October
17,1931 in Minerva, Ohio to Jim and Flossie Byrd. She is one of 10 children and one of a set of twin girls. She was married to Robert L. Moore for 59 years who preceded her in death in
August, 2008. She is survived by her children; Randy Moore,
Alan Moore (Dawn), Merry Beck (Tom) and Karen Rowe (Randy), 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren,
as well as 5 of her siblings; Evelyn Douglas (twin sister), Justine Moore (Bill), Betty Ellison (Earl), Bernnice
Sampley, Keith Byrd (Shirley).
Mom loved to read and was never without a book in hand.
She loved nature and the owers and plants in her garden provided an enjoyable and peaceful backdrop for those that visited it. She loved helping others, especially children in need, and spent several years organizing a program that united children with companions through a Kinship program at her church. Mom also loved to write and worked for the Reedley Exponent and later, the Clovis Independent. She created articles that shed light on human-interest ‘moments’ in time. Many of mom’s writings were ones that could be used to ‘teach’ life les- sons about ethics and morals. A er retiring she also became an accomplished poet. Her children and grandchildren have been blessed to have this caring, compassionate, supportive, intel- ligent, creative, humble, honorable, hard-working, and talented servant of God as their Mom.
Visitation at Cairns Funeral home Monday, October 8, 4-8pm.
Services will be held on October 9, 2018 at 10:30am, Christ Lutheran Church, Reedley, CA. Lunch to follow in the fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the following youth ministries: Christ Lutheran Church, Reedley (1254 N. Frankwood Ave, 93654) or Trinity Lutheran Church, Fresno (3973 N. Cedar Ave., 93726). We would like to thank the sta at both Optimal Hospice and Willow Creek HealthCare Center for all of the
