Led by a desire to make
the process easier, Estes and his two colleagues developed software that he calls a “brain for music.”
“We trained a computer how to write music in a style that people want,” Estes said.
Although the software has not officially launched, Estes said they are already getting positive feedback.
Estes said anyone can use his company’s software, from a big artist who wants to write a pop song to someone creat- ing music for a wedding video.
Some might consider this cheating, but Estes said the software doesn’t do all the work. It still requires human input and general direction, al- lowing for creativity.
He said the software streamlines the programming process so that people can “fo- cus on making the music they want.”
Estes said composing music using artificial intelli- gence is much like the transi- tion from manual labor to the industrial revolution, which he said allowed society to “be creative and made our lives a lot better.”
“Our industry helps peo- ple get to the music they want faster and better. It’s a tool to

help us,” he said. “We’re fos- tering creativity in people.”
Estes’ love for music be- gan at an early age, having grown up in a musical family.
“I’ve been surrounded by music for my entire life,” he said.
His father is a retired pastor with a minor in music, his mother is a retired piano teacher, and his grandmother was a professional harpist. Estes has a background in woodwinds, piano, and voice.
“Music is a deeper con- nection with the soul and a better means of communicat- ing with people than just lan- guage,” he said.
Estes said he’s fascinated by the deep emotional con- nection that people have with music.
“There’s nothing tangible about it,” he said.
Estes’ musical career be- gan after earning his master’s degree in music composition and technologies from Uni- versity of Colorado Boulder.
He moved to Los Ange- les in 2006 and was hired by Remote Control Productions owned by Hans Zimmer. There, he designed sounds for movies such as Angels and Demons, Sherlock Holmes, Rango, Pirates of the Carib- bean IV, Dark Knight Rises, as well as video games.

Duarte appreciated the diversity of this year’s group of campers, which included more girls compared to last year.
She said that’s a good sign because one of the goals of the camp is to make young girls aware that they have equal opportunities in STEM careers, which are typically dominated by men. Duarte said that is the primary rea- son she joined the STEM Club, to serve as an example for young girls.
Added Duarte: “We are all passionate about sharing STEM.”
