Retirement: Planning for the changing needs as you age
ss
ss
  By Jim Dueck
Today, most devel- oped countries have systems to provide pensions for retirement in old age typically funded by employer pensions and matched savings accounts, employees, or govern- ment programs like
social security. While the standard retire- ment age varies, it is generally between 50 and 70, when people choose to retire and not necessarily because of age or inability to do their job.
Retirement is still
a new concept. Ger- many was the first country to introduce retirement benefits in 1889. Prior to that, the average life expectancy was between 26 and 40 years of age and low life expectancy and
the absence of pension arrangements meant that most workers con- tinued to work until death. Consequently,
relatively few reached an age where disabil- ity was an obstacle to working. Other coun- tries began to adopt government policies on retirement during the late 19th and 20th century.
The perceptions
of retirement living continue to evolve. It began with seeing our great-grandparents and grandparents in nursing care. More recent developments in senior living are as- sisted living, memory care, and indepen- dent living for active and healthy seniors. When senior’s move
to a retirement com-
munity earlier rather than later, health can improve and there can be more independence. The focus can now be on what a senior wants to do rather than what they have to do.
An increasing num- ber of individuals are choosing to put off full retirement and
are choosing to live in a state of pre-retire- ment. Pre-retirement is generally the first step used to determine several key factors in preparing for retire- ment.
Practice - deter- mine whether you’ll have enough income to support your desired
lifestyle by living sev- eral months with the funds you will likely have in retirement.
 Plan – adjust and plan your expenses for living; and planning for future unexpected health care needs is an important part of your complete retirement plan
Work – with a financial planner to make sure that you are on track with invest- ments, savings, and assets; and your insur- ance professional for long-term care and Medicare Part B plans
Where –think through your chang- ing housing needs as
you age. Visit retire- ment communities and senior housing options that allow for your style of desired living and costs associated with living in those communities.
What – what to do when you are re- placing a busy work life. Are you planning on traveling, golf, and hobbies? Those ex- penses and availability should also be consid- ered.
Since retirement is very much a part of the world we live in, choosing when and where to retire involves careful thought and planning.
