RobeRt W. Kennedy
April 26, 1936 ~ July 31, 2021
Robert William Kennedy, longtime Sanger jeweler and businessman, died peacefully on October 13, 2021. He was 97.
He was born November 22, 1923 to Ivan Delos and Catherine Adams Kennedy on their DeWolf Avenue ranch in Del Rey. Robert grew up with his older sister Evelyn on the ranch where his father raised grapes. Robert learned early how to work hard by helping his father with making lug boxes, raisin trays, driving mules and tractors and killing rabbits and gophers that harmed the grapevines and irrigation ditches.
He attended grammar school at DeWolf School where his mother was his teacher for the first four grades. He graduated from Sanger High School in 1941.
Deciding that farming was not for him, Robert was attracted to the booming aviation field. In September 1941, he began learning instrument repair at American School of Aircraft Instruments in Glendale. After World War II began, aircraft instrument repair became a vital wartime industry. Robert graduated in June 1942. At the age of 19, he went east to Bedford, Ohio where he worked as a supervisor for Jack & Heintz Co. and made intricate gyro instruments for autopilots in bombers.
As the war and his job ended, Robert decided to become a jeweler. He studied at Bradley School of Engraving and Bradley School for Jewelers and apprenticed under a jeweler in Peoria, Illinois. In the spring of 1946, he started Kenmor Jewelers in Sanger with his brother-in-law and partner Don Morrison.
Meanwhile, Robert was drafted into the army in May 1946. He served as a radio repairman at Fort Bliss, Texas and repaired large model planes used as targets for gunners in training. He was discharged early in March 1947 when the army was demobilizing.
In 1950, Robert married Oleta Brown, and they had 25 years together until she died in 1975. In 1977, Robert married Norma Kingen, and they had 41 years together until she died in 2018.
At Kenmor Jewelers, Robert repaired jewelry, watches and clocks for countless customers over the years. He was known for his fine workmanship and kind attention to customers. In 1974, he welcomed and trained his son-in-law Jerry Kemp in the business.
After 51 years in business, Kenmor Jewelers in Sanger closed in 1997. Jerry Kemp carries on the Kenmor Jewelers name in the Fresno store he opened in 2003. Robert continued doing repair work for Jerry and out of his home until he was 95.
In 2019, he was honored by the Sanger Masonic Lodge #316 for 75 years of membership.
He is survived by four children, Susan Kemp (Jerry) of Fresno, Cathy Baker (Bob) of Oklahoma, Christi Weybret (Marty) of Lodi and Dale Kingen (Joseph Boado) of Fresno; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Thursday, October 21 at 2 p.m. at Sanger Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, people wishing to remember Robert may make donations to their charity of choice.
