Remick will serve as KCUSD board president in 2018
By Felicia Cousart Matlosz
felicia@midvalleypublishing.com
Noel Remick, a veteran member of the Kings Canyon Unified School District governing board, will serve as board president for the coming year.
The trustees voted 7-0 to elect Remick during their Dec. 12 meeting at the district’s Educational Support Center in downtown Reedley.
In turn, Trustee Sarah Rola was elected the board clerk on a 7-0 vote. The organizational moves are
conducted each year, typically in De- cember before a new calendar year begins.
Remick, who represents Trustee Area 1 in southwest Reedley, suc- ceeds Trustee Robin Tyler of Trustee Area 4 in northeast Reedley as presi- dent.
Remick had been clerk. Rola, of Trustee Area 2 in south-central Reed- ley, succeeds him.
This is Remick’s fourth turn as board president. He was first elect- ed in 1998 and served until 2010. In April 2012, he was appointed to the
board after Trustee Ray Enns re- signed.
The other members of the board are Connie Brooks (Area 3 in north- west Reedley), Craig Cooper (Area 6 that includes Squaw Valley and Dun- lap), Manuel Ferreira (Area 5 in Or- ange Cove), and Clotilda Mora (Area 7 in north-central Reedley).
Cooper is the newest member of the board. The trustees on Nov. 14 selected him by provisional appoint- ment to fill the Area 6 seat once held by Floyd Smith.
Smith, who had served since
2004, resigned because he was mov- ing to Utah. Though Smith’s term ends in 2020, the terms of a provi- sional appointment require that the post be up for election in the next general election, which is Novem- ber 2018.
As voter-elected officials, the KCUSD trustees’ responsibilities include setting policy, adopting an annual budget and establishing aca- demic goals and standards.
Their next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the Educational Support Center on 10th
street between the Rails to Trails Parkway and the railroad tracks.
The trustees meet every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, unless they need to change a date. The meetings are public. Closed sessions begin at 5:45 p.m. (Closed sessions, also known as executive sessions, involve specific areas that must be discussed confidentially, such as negotiations, personnel is- sues and litigation.)
The public sessions at these meetings begin at 7:15 p.m.
