Random thoughts about helping to organize the Christmas parade
You'll continue to hear the wind machines through at least about the middle of next week. Nighttime tempera- tures will be in the mid to low 30s until then.
The daytime temperature will be in the mid to high 60s. No rain is in the forecast.
There could, however, be patches of dense tule fog dur- ing our late nights and early mornings.
Sorry, but there's not likely to be much, if any, fresh snow on Sunday for the trek to the General Grant Tree.
It will be cool, however, so bundle up if you're planning to make the trip. Daytime tem- peratures have been in the mid-40s.
If you would like the trip but don't feel like driving you'd better call the chamber of commerce right away at 875-4575 to see if there are any seats available on the shuttle buses to and from the event.
It's time to think about your pet's safety on these cold nights. Pets that spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy. Rou- tinely check your pet's water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen.
If your dog is outdoors much of the day or night it should be protected by a dry, draft-free shelter that is large enough to allow it to move

"Red Fox" was found running loose near a senior care facil- ity on 9th Street. He's probably a setter mix, about 2 years old and around 40 pounds. He gets along well with other dogs and enjoys walking on a leash.
Also available for adoption:
• Doc is a sweet, friendly, gentle and mature pitbull mix who has been in the shelter for awhile and would really like to be your new best friend. He's maybe 6-7 years old, weighs about 50 pounds and loves to walk.
• Joey is a 7 month old border collie/terrier mix. His sister, Joy, has already been adopted; and,
• Jojo, a gentle, friendly and enthusiastic blue nose pitbull who will bring you his bowl when it's time to eat.
Call Sanger animal control officer Mario Irazoqui at (559) 618-9071 to make an appointment to meet Red Fox or Doc any of the other dogs hoping for a forever home for Christmas.
Adoption requires spaying/neutering and bringing the rabies shot up to date. The only charge is to the veterinarian, Gregory Saiki DVM.

Chamber of commerce boss Tammy Wolfe would be the first to admit the cham- ber could use a few more volunteers to help with our great Christmas parade.
There's a lot of behind the scenes activity on the morn- ing of the parade, before dignitaries in convertibles, marching bands, cheer squads, FFA groups, military units with flags, tricked out cars, decorated school buses and prancing horses move off side streets where the divisions were organized onto 10th Street and into the parade route.
The chamber could use help organizing each of the parade divisions, helping with traffic control, keeping the parade moving with few stops and starts and with proper separation between entries, running errands, answering questions from parents trying to figure out
where to take excited kids who are going to ride on a float in their very first pa- rade ... and lots more.
I've helped organize a parade division probably a half dozen times. Each time is different and each time is fun. Yougettowearacool orange vest, get free donuts andcoffeeandifthe bur- rito guy shows up on time, a breakfast burrito.
My division this year was composed of mostly youth groups and I got to catch up with an old friend, Victor Manriquez, who admitted he was going for an ugly Christ- mas sweater look and he was right on target.
Victor was in charge of a float filled with good looking, well behaved youngsters from his "Trucha Camp."
"The Spanish word 'trucha' means 'trout' in English. But it also means to be smart and to strive for excellence," Vic- tor told me.

The "Trucha Camp" float, filled with smiling kids and leader Vic- tor Manriquez wearing one of the ugliest Christmas sweaters I have ever seen, was in the parade division I helped organize. Just about everyone who wandered by in the fog before the parade started wanted photos of the youngsters and the ugly sweater. In the front row, L-R, Valeri Garcia, Roman Cantu, Dai- sy de Santiago, Ashley Huape, Christian Tellez, Emma Valdez and Elijah DeLeon. In the back row, l-R, Victor H. Manriquez, Denise Garcia, Maelena Perez, Abram Sanchez, Alexandra Hysell, Sofia Valdez, Eduardo Castro-Ramirez, Isaiah Garcia and Viviana Andrade.

emy Charter Schools have
a unique PE program called Trucha Camp. The program was developed by Victor and retired UCLA profes- sor Ramses Noriega. It's different than traditional PE programs because along with sports skills, fitness, nutrition and health, it also focuses on fostering critical thinking, character develop- ment and leadership - and this year, apparently, devel- oping an appreciation for ugly Christmas sweaters.
Each one of the floats in my division had someone in charge like Victor - dedicat- ed, enthusiastic and excited to talk about what his or her float or youth group repre- sented.
It was a great way to spend Saturday morning. It would have been better if the burrito guy had showed up on time.
Call the chamber at 875- 4575 to find out how to get involved.
