up as the school’s mas- cot.
“One of things they will have to do when they get into the middle school is community service hours,” Queve- do added. “So I wanted to expose them to that.”
While there, the leadership students took time to not only learn about the horse ranch but also to clean the stalls, groom and walk horses, and lend a hand wherever they could.
“This is a plan we’ve had for three years, and it finally came to fruition,” said Bitanga. “And the kids are lov- ing it. It’s something we plan on doing every year.”
Sure, they also en- joyed bounce houses and horse rides, but
not without exhibiting the qualities that make them leaders.
The group from Golden Valley enjoyed hamburgers and hot dogs and also had a chance to spin a prize wheel.
Mending Fences, Changing Minds was formed by Alvarez as a way to help instill work ethic in at-risk stu- dents. The horse ranch is cared for by students from the Cutler-Orosi area. Horses from the ranch, along with some of the students who care for them, recent- ly participated in the Orosi Veterans Parade, held the first Saturday of this month.
Alvarez said the ranch, which is now seeing more visitors, has been instrumental in ‘changing minds’ of local youth.
