It was a championship afternoon for the Reedley High girls and Pi- rates’ senior Matthew Jarrett at the North Yosemite League cross coun- try championships on Nov. 15.
Reedley’s girls — led by sopho- more Paola Rangel’s third place fin- ish — repeated as league champions with five top 10 finishers; compiling 35 points to easily top Fresno High’s 62 points. Jarrett, meanwhile, turned in a season best time of 16 minutes, 49.69 seconds to win the boys var- sity race over the 5,000 meter state meet course at Woodward Park. The Pirates finished second in the team standings, compiling 49 points to trail Roosevelt’s 29 point score.
Robby Jarrett, Reedley boys coach and Matthew’s father, said winning the league individual title was his goal.
“He had the mindset that this was the year he was winning league,” the coach said.
Matthew Jarrett charged from a third place position in the first mile or so to take the lead, and continued at an attacking pace the latter stage of the race to win by 10 seconds over Roosevelt senior Anthony Preciado. Jarrett tossed away his glasses that he normally runs in during the sec- ond mile as he made his charge, and after crossing the finish line col- lapsed in exhaustion for a few min- utes before rehydrating.
The Pirate girls’ depth was the difference in beating out Fresno High, although the Warriors had the second and third place finish- ers. But Rangel (who posted a time of 20:45.11) was complemented by top 10 teammates in senior Ximena Ramos (sixth in 21:02.06), senior Jas- mine Garcia (seventh in 21:18.70), freshman Ariceli Villareal (eighth in 21:29.93) and senior Natalie Reyes (10th in 21:56.33). Freshman Yasmin Sinchi Gutierrez also placed 13th (22:19.41) out of 39 runners in the field.
Jarrett was joined in the top
10 by fellow senior Eric Aguilar, who placed sixth in 17:23.44. Junior Evan Leal finished 12th (17:53.04), freshman Juan Carrillo was 14th (18:06.67), frosh Francisco Ramos placed 16th (18:08.65), senior Nicolas Rodriguez was 19th (18:17.8) while sophomore Jordan Barajas finished 22nd (18:28.13) out of 40 runners.
Roosevelt had four top 10 fin- ishers and all seven in the top 17. Varsity girls champion was Sunny- side High senior Jessica Valles, who clocked 19:01.19.
Reedley’s varsity teams will com- pete in Division 2 on Thursday, Nov. 21 at the Central Section champion- ships at Woodward Park. The girls will compete at 11 a.m. while the boys race is at noon.
On Nov. 15, the Pirates also cap- tured the league championship in frosh-soph boys and girls divisions along with junior varsity girls. Se- nior Rocio Andrade was the JV girls individual champ in 24:03.82 while sophomore Nadisela Cruz Morales won in frosh-soph girls (23:52.72).

fense like the Cardinals. “They’ll have to make some adjustments to stop us,” White said. “I would expect another tight game like last week. It could come down to who has the
ball last once again.”
