Garden Checklist: Time for New Years resolutions
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
Plan now for New Year’s resolutions for the garden. Check gar- dening books for ideas.
Tasks for this time include, spraying apri- cots and walnuts with horticultural oil and fixed copper.
Provide frost protec- tion. Move or cover ten- der plants. Use floating
row covers or fabric and uncover plants dur- ing the day. Frost pro- tection material allows light through and may be left in place. Plastic is not recommended.
Pruning, do not re- move leaves from shrub and groundcover roses.
When harvesting blooms for arrange- ments, make your cuts with an eye to shaping the plant.
No fertilization is recommended this month.
Remember when planting, this is a good time to move peren-
nials, shrubs or small trees.
Bulbs, corms, tubers: gladiolus, Oriental hy- brid (Lilium).
Fruits and vegeta- bles: onion sets, parsley, radish. Trees, shrubs, vines: rose (Rosa), brid- al wreath spiraea (Spi- raea prunifolia).
Enjoy now, annuals and perennials: stock (Matthiola), pansy (Vi- ola), Johnny-jump-up (Viola tricolor).
Bulbs, corms, tubers: Squill (Scilla tuberge- niana).
Trees, shrubs, vines: bridal wreath spiraea
(Spiraea prunifolia). Fruits and vegeta- bles: lettuce, navel or-
ange, parsley, turnip. Things to ponder, this is a good time to di- vide African violets for
early spring bloom. Source, adapted from “A Gardener’s Companion for the Cen- tral San Joaquin Valley,” 3rd edition, currently available from Fresno County Master Garden- ers for $30. Gardening Questions answered at
