RODRIGUEZ Continued from page A1
“A lot of people can’t wrap their head around what they’ve seen, but I’ve seen a lot and I get asked all the time, how does that not affect you?” he said. “Of course after a call, we talk about it among our peers if there was something that bothered us, but we don’t take that home with us, you just can’t do that.”
Rodriguez recalled one of the first calls he respond- ed to, and explained why it affected him so much.
“When I arrived on scene first thing I saw was a car wrapped around a tree,” he said. “What ended up happening was these guys were partying in Fresno and somehow got lost in Reedley. They started on Kings River Road and reached speeds of 100 miles per hour near the four way stop next to the cemetery, their car went airborne and spun out of con- trol and came to rest against a tree.”
Rodriguez added that the passengers of the accident all died and alcohol was be- lieved to be a factor in the crash.
“We always hear the re- percussions of drinking and driving, but to see the ef- fects of it in person, that is two very different things,” he said. “I remember the scene itself was scary, there was complete silence all around except for the mu- sic on their car stereo. They had music going in their

car and the music was still playing when we arrived on scene.”
He said the call gave him a new appreciation for life.
Rodriguez grew up in Reedley. He attended Reed- ley High School, and is now married with four kids.
He said he enjoys giv- ing back to the people of his community.
“It’s something that I never thought about when I joined this volunteer depart- ment, but when I joined and
started running calls and started running into people I knew,” he said. “Being there for someone’s worst day of their life, and to make a difference to them, and for them to say ‘thank you,’ I re- ally believe that is what giv- ing back to the community is really about.”

to begin taking advantage of water made available because of the water release situation according to Matt Meadows, assistant water master.
“This is a perfectly nor- mal response by the Corps of Engineers to what is turning out to be an above-average water year,” Haugen said. He cautioned that fishing enthusi- asts and others along the river “need to be aware of higher water conditions and exercise caution along all riverbanks.”
The flood release likely will last a minimum of three to four weeks, with potential
to last into the summer, ac- cording to KRWA officials.
The 2018 summer water recreation season was a nor- mal one, but these later-winter totals are the highest since the flooding of 2017. That caused a spring closure of the Kings River in late May 2017 and a late start to the summer water recreation season.
The Corps assumes all primary Kings River water management decisions from the KRWA during a flood re- lease. The Corps oversees the San Joaquin Valley’s overall flood management.
