The Fresno County Department of Public Health and the Univer- sity of California, San Diego recently released their findings from the school-based survey: 2017-2018 California Student Tobacco Survey (CSTS) specific to Fresno County.
Only 1.9 percent of surveyed 10th and 12th graders smoke, but 8.4
percent are currently us- ing e-cigarettes.
“The popularity of e- cigarettes is a particu- lar cause for concern because these products such as the JUUL have very high levels of nico- tine. Nicotine is one of the most toxic of all poi- sonous chemicals. It al- ters a teenager’s brain and affects attention span, learning and mem- ory. These changes to the brain can become perma-
nent,” said Dr. Ken Bird, Fresno County Deputy Health Officer.
Key survey findings also include the follow- ing:
• E-cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among high school students in Fresno County.
• 79.7 percent of cur- rent tobacco users re- ported using a flavored tobacco product.
• 22 percent of stu-
dents were exposed to secondhand vapor and 28.1 percent were ex- posed to secondhand smoke in the last 30 days.
• 50.2 percent of stu- dents who visited a con- venience store that had tobacco ads and promo- tions in the last 30 days were within walking dis- tance of their school.
• More than one-third (35.6 percent) of high

Lawrence “Larry”
Patrick Probert
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Lawrence Patrick Probert on Monday, October 7, 2019 at the age of 80. He was born on December 20, 1938 and was raised in Torrance, Cali- fornia by parents George and Mildred Probert. He had an older sister, Jean- nette Probert whom passed in July 1985.
In January 1965, Lawrence married Diane (McCoy) in Ba- kersfield, CA. He then moved to Sanger, CA in 1973 where his sister was an instructor at Sanger High. Once established, his family followed in 1975. Living in Sanger for over 45 years, we believe our father became a true Sanger native.
Lawrence (Larry, as he was known) worked for California Hardware for over 35 years covering the Central Valley for his accounts. He made many lifelong friends along the way, including a special group of folks at Sanger Nursery, where he spent many Saturdays helping customers and shooting the breeze with locals. He was a proud member of the lo- cal Kiwanis Service Club in Sanger. His passions included playing golf at the Sherwood Forest Golf Club, watching and following his favorite sports teams including the 49’ers, SF Giants, Fresno State, the local Sanger Apaches, and his fam- ily’s alma mater: the USC Trojans. He also enjoyed travel- ing, reading the daily newspapers from Fresno, LA, and Bay Area, and talking to friends.
He is survived by his son, George L. Probert of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Margarett A. Wunder of Clovis, CA; and two grandchildren, Ethan Wunder and Kathleen Wunder.
A Memorial Service will be held in February 2020 in Sanger, CA after the holiday season is over.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home, 1524 9th Street, Sanger, CA 93657.
