Sanger High runner Nia Lamas beat out all competition at the recent Asics Clovis Invitational, held Oct. 12 at Woodward Park. Competing in one of the biggest cross country events in the state, featuring over 200 teams, the Apache sophomore won the 5000 meters XL school varsity race with a new school record time of 18:19.9.
line with a time of 18:19.9. Her time was nearly four seconds faster than second place finisher Abigail Fletcher of Oak Ridge.
The victory for Fletcher, accord- ing to Marzolf, was her second first place finish at the Clovis Invitation- al. She also won last year’s event with a time of 18:36, improving her time this year by 17 seconds.
Finishing with a time of 19:22.5, good enough for 17th place in the biggest division, Sanger High ju- nior Rebecca Coronado recorded the third fastest time in Sanger High History.
Rounding out the top finishers for Sanger were Sienna Bianchi (20:13.1), Jennifer Recinos (20:48) and Jahari Garcia (21:04.6). Ac- cording to Marzolf, Bianchi’s and Recino’s times were good enough for 10th and 12th best, respectively, in Sanger High History.
The Sanger High varsity girls finished with 196 points. They rep- resented the only Valley school to finish in the top ten of the event’s largest school division.

Reedley High’s cross country teams will compete in one more meet this week before they host a 50-year celebration of the school’s program on Thursday, Oct. 24.
The Pirates will partici- pate in the Roughrider Invi- tational at Woodward Park in Fresno starting at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18. It’s the second straight meet the boys team has run this sea- son at Woodward Park, site of the league, section and state championships.
Reedley finished 20th out of 33 schools compet- ing in the medium schools division of the Clovis Invi- tational on Oct. 12, scoring 537 points. The Pirates’ top finisher was senior Mat-
thew Jarrett, who covered the 5,000 meters course in 17 minutes, 1.1 seconds to place 59th out of 220 run- ners. Freshman Juan Car- rillo finished 100th in a time of 17:32. Other RHS finishers were freshman Francisco Ramos (107th in 17:33.9), senior Eric Agui- lar (131st in 17:45.3) junior Evan Leal (145th in 17:56.2) sophomore Sergio Fregoso (162nd in 18:12.3) and se- nior Nicolas Rodriguez (187th in 18:37.3).
Jarrett also was the Pirates’ top finisher in the varsity boys sweep- stakes run at the Golden West Invitational on Oct. 4 in Visalia, placing 17th out of 47 runners with a time of 16:38.52 over a flat course. Freshmen Car-
rillo (16:58.53) and Ramos (17:11.86) placed 23rd and 26th, respectively, as the Pi- rates placed seventh in the team standings with 129 points. In the girls sweep- stakes, senior Jasmine Garcia placed 15th out of 55 runners with a time of 19:57.62 as RHS took fourth in the team standings with 127 points.
Other Reedley girls finishers at the Golden West meet were freshman Ariceli Villareal (26th in 20:49.23), senior Natalie Reyes (27th in 21:00.54), sophomore Paola Rangel (28th in 21:09.05), senior Ximena Ramos (31st in 21:27.01), senior Keila Ro- bles (32nd in 21:41.61) and freshman Yasmin Sinchi Gutierrez (33rd in 21:42.74).

Immanuel High along with Parlier competed in the varsity races at the Si- erra Pacific Golden Bear Invitational on Oct. 11 in Hanford. Immanuel junior Paige Howard finished 71st in 24:40.94 .In the varsity boys race, Parlier had four runners compete, led by ju- nior Alejandro Valdovinos (22nd in 15:41.67). The Ea- gles had two runners com- pete in senior Wolfgang Hoffman (89th in 18:11.56) and junior James Blakely (112th in 22:24.51).

Luz Diaz finished 16th overall in a time of 20 minutes, 52.08 sec- onds to lead the Dinuba High girls cross country team at the Sierra Pacif- ic Invitational on Friday in Hanford.

In one of the biggest and most competitive races in the state of California, the Sanger Apaches showed that they can compete with some of the biggest schools in the state.
“Coaches were very happy with the day at the Clovis Invitational,” said Sanger cross country head coach Sean Marzolf.
At the Asics Clovis Invitational, held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Wood- ward Park in Fresno, the Sanger Apache varsity girls took 4th place in the meets extra-large school divi- sion, only edged out by Oak Ridge High School of El Dorado Hills (71 points), La Serna High School of Whittier (158 points) and Home- stead High School of Cupertino (178 points).
The race featured over 200 schools from across the state, and even featured teams from outside of California.
Though Oak Ridge ran away with first place by finishing two of its runners in the top 10 and four in the top 20, it was an Apache run- ner who crossed the finish line first. Sanger High sophomore Nia Lamas was first in the largest varsity girls race to date this year, crossing the

Leading what coach Marzolf says is the fastest Sanger team since 1998, with an average time of 16:46, was Apaches runner Eman- uel Salas. The sophomore runner finished the largest school 5000 meters event with a time of 16:13.3, good enough for 27th place.
Salas’ time was also the second fastest time by a sophomore in school history. He was also among the top three sophomores to finish the race.
Finishing just behind Salas were teammates David DeLoera, in 16:34.4 for 44th place, and Jayden Olea, in 16:39.4 for 54th place.
Other top finishers for Sanger were Ben Awad (17:00.8) and Juan Zamora (17:22.1).
“Our kids battled through to the end and left it all on the course,” added Marzolf. “We are proud of the Lifetime Bests (PR’s) and the ability to step it up on the big stage.”
The Apache runners will be traveling to the Lake Yosemite Recreation Area tomorrow for the Thunder XC Classic. The event will feature ten of the top teams from the San Joaquin Valley.

Chalk up another Big 8 Confer- ence tournament win for the un- defeated Reedley College women’s golf team.
The Lady Tigers won the tourna- ment at the Turlock Country Club with a team score of 314. Reedley went into the Thursday action with a 10-point lead in the conference. Serena DiMauro (Central, Fresno) led Reedley with a 74, followed by Monica Yu (San Diego) at 76, Alyssa Bendure (Clovis North) with a 79 and Serena Garcia (Dinuba) with an 85. “The girls really played solid,” said head coach Scott Stark.
Also, for the second straight year, the Reedley College women’s golf team won the Jan High Memo- rial Tournament in Sacramento.
Head Coach Scott Stark’s Lady Tigers won the tournament on Oct. 8 in the Modified Stableford scoring system. “We won by 18 points,” said Stark, “with a school record score of 134. It was the first time with four girls in the 30’s.”

with 39 points. Alyssa Bendure (Clo- vis North) and Mya Chao (Golden West, Visalia) both made the all-tour- nament team with 32 points while Serena DiMauro (Central, Fresno) was right behind with 31 points.
Other Reedley scores includ- ed Serena Garcia (Dinuba) with 24 points, McKenzie Quinn (Clo- vis East) with 17 points and Nikki McArron (Immanuel) with 14 points. “The girls played really well,” added Stark.
Reedley returns to the course on Tuesday, Oct. 17 as they host the sixth Big 8 Conference tournament at the Kings River Golf and Country Club in Kingsburg at noon.

The Dinuba High girls volleyball team knocked off Immanuel on Oct.9, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 15-7.
Dinuba's Ally Garcia had 23 kills in the match. Azlynn Villalobos had 9 kills and Emily Rico fin- ished with two aces.
The win improves
DHS to 20-9 overall and 5-4 in Central Sequoia League action while IHS is 3-6 and 18-9.
Earlier this year, the Emperors were swept by the Eagles, according to coach Scott Simoni.
Dinuba will face league leader Central Val- ley Christian on Monday in Visalia and host Exeter on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
