sustained success in raising student achieve- ment.
Staying in shape
Sanger Seniors Exercise Class meets twice a week, year around, at the community center. It has about 30 members, but only 20 usually show up, said exercise leader Doris Knowlton. On the day the Herald was there to take pictures, a couple of city councilmem- bers, mayor pro tem Eli Ontiveros and coun- cilmember Melissa Hurtado, were working out with the group. Both later admitted the class wasn't as easy as they expected.
Welcome back to school
Matt Navo, superintendent of schools, took less than a dozen minutes to underline and put exclamation marks around the latest call to action for the award winning Sanger Uni- fied School District, "Be an Inspiration!" That's the motto for this school year. "Be courageous!" was last year's motto. Four
years ago it was "Dream Big, Work Hard and Believe" coupled with the district's ongoing theme of "Every Child, Every Day, What- ever it Takes." Three years ago it was "All In Together," and two years ago during a time of great change with the introduction of Com- mon Core and new technology, the motto was, "Never Give Up!"
"Remember our present is not their fu- ture," Navo told 2,500 district employees. He was talking about the approximately 12,000 students who returned to school for the 2017- 2018 school year.
The way the year turned out it was to be Navo's final welcome back event.
New chamber board members
Christine Erickson, Daniel Galvez, Sharri Gumber-Carter and Dawn McCollum became new chamber of commerce board members. The other board members are: Cheryl Senn,

Obituary
In late July when the temperature was almost 100 degrees tired firefighters made their way through a tangle of water hoses, empty air cannisters and thick smoke. Joshua Slater, firefighter/ paramedic, left, had to take several breaks to catch his breath and rehydrate before strap- ping on another air cannister and going back to the firefight. Fire chief Greg Tarascou, right, coordinated the efforts of 55 firefighters from eight different fire departments fighting a fire that destroyed a four unit portion of the Driftwood Apartments complex.
