Immanuel High and Reedley High both got off to winning starts in the Central Section Division 3 volleyball playoffs on Oct. 31.
The No. 3 seed Eagles (23-10 overall) swept No. 14 Cesar Chavez High from Delano by scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19 at IHS gym. Meanwhile, the ninth-seed- ed North Yosemite League champion Pirates (25-13) prevailed in three close sets against No. 8 Arvin with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 sweep.
Senior captain MacK- enzie Coats paced the Im- manuel offense with 11 kills and nine digs, junior setter Brooke Hatch dished out 17 assists while senior libero Claire Ramirez made 17 digs.
“Chavez is a very crafty team,” said Immanuel coach Debbie Linman. “We think the ball is down and they’re picking it up. But the girls really pulled it to- gether and communicated quite well together.”
The Eagles, who fin- ished just 5-7 in the Central Sequoia League, are look- ing to repeat last year’s postseason magic which took them to the section finals and a Southern Re- gional playoff.
“We’re always up and down, [but] this is a new season,” Linman said. “Nine returning players all have playoff experience.
Immanuel hosted No. 6 Morro Bay High on Nov. 5atIHSgym,andavic- tory would advance the Eagles to a likely semifinal matchup at No. 2 Tulare Western on Thursday, Nov. 7. The section finals will be on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Col- lege of the Sequoias gym in Visalia.
Reedley High used a “total team effort” to put away Arvin, according to coach Ken Tatami.
“We didn’t play really sharp, probably due to the long travel, but played well together,” he said. “The of- fense was a bit off but the defense was solid as evi- denced by the defensive stats.”
Junior outside hitter Lexi Canales had nine kills and 14 digs while ju- nior setter Rylie Kubo had 27 assists and 23 digs. Bronagh McGahan and Lauren Betancourt each added 16 digs while Sophia Lampa contributed 14 digs. Freshman Lillian Martinez had six kills while seniors Lauryn King and captain Madison Haney had five and four kills, respectively.

Martinez would add his last TD of the game on a 20-yard run in the
4th quarter. Orange Cove added a TD on a 10-yard pass play from Ramirez to Mario Reynosa. The Titans would score two more times behind An- tonio Guerrero and Ivan Zavala. Orange Cove ends the season with a 3-7 record.

Fresno’s Dasia Scott had a match-high 18 kills. The 6-foot inch senior standout also recorded 5 blocks.
The two teams were close in statistics as each team recorded 34 kills but the Lady Warriors had the edge in service aces, 16-13.
Orosi head coach Yesenia Alcala said the match was intense.
“The team did great defensively, and had sev- eral long rallies on both sides trying to get the point.”
Sophomore Laisha Artega paced Orosi with 11 kills and four blocks and junior Aimee Queve- do delivered seven kills to go along with eight ser- vice aces and four blocks. Senior Alaze Romero finished the match with seven kills and junior set- ter Sinai Pina recorded 33 assists.
Despite the setback, Alcala is looking forward to next season.
“We had a great sea- son,” she said. “I have six varsity returners next year. A lot of work will be put in for next season and I can’t wait to come back stronger than this year.”
