Garden Checklist: Keep close eye on plants for heat stress
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
Remember, friends, neighbors and shut-ins with extra produce and flowers from your gar- den.
Tasks for this time of year include considering the removal of ground- covers, turfgrass, or an- nual flowers from little- used garden areas such as parking strips, medi- ans or lawn “islands.”
Cover bare soil with a layer of mulch. This reduces weeds and helps the soil retain moisture.
Harvest vegetables and annuals regularly. Harvest apricots, ber- ries, figs, plums and nec- tarines.
When pruning dead- head annuals and pe- rennials, prune lightly to avoid vigorous re- growth.
Deadheading roses encourages reblooming. When planting, re-
member midsummer in the Valley is typically not the best time for planting. New plants struggle to get estab- lished in high tempera- tures, low humidity, and intense sunlight.
Enjoy these now, an- nuals and perennials: vinca (Catharanthus), cockscomb (Celosia), morning glory
(Convolvulus), co- reopsis. Bulbs, corms, tubers: dahlia, fortnight
lily (Dietes).
Trees, shrubs, vines:
bougainvillea, escallonia. Fruits and vegeta- bles: blueberries, car-
rots, corn, cucumber. Things to ponder, do not spray herbicides when daily temperatures exceed 100 degrees to prevent the spray from
vaporizing.
Protect neighboring
plants with a cardboard shield when spraying herbicides.
Watch for leaf drop, wilting or folded leaves which are the first signs of heat stress.
Weeds compete with landscape plants for space, water and sun-
light. Remove existing weeds by hand pull- ing, hoeing, or the ap- plication of appropriate herbicides following la- bel instructions. A 2-3” layer of mulch will sup- press weed seed germi- nation in the future and help conserve soil mois-
ture.

Olson said that Donna
was an inspiration to the group because of her strength and ability to keep moving forward.
“She was a lady that was fighting bone can- cer but she still came
out here," said Olson. "She still worked so hard in keeping her little box going."
