Recent storms improved the Sierra Nevada snowpack, but the snow water equiva- lent totals remain well below normal for this time of year.
A March 5 snow survey taken by California Depart- ment of Water Resources of- ficials in the mountains east of Sacramento measured 9.4 inches of equivalent mois- ture – less than 40 percent of normal for early March. But the figure represented a big increase over a Feb. 28 survey on site that measured just 7 percent of average.

Southern Sierra in Tulare and Kern Counties showed snowpack water levels at 37. The statewide snowpack snow water equivalent is 9.5 inches, 37 percent of normal.
Snow water equivalent is the amount of water con- tained within the snowpack. The snowpack — often called California’s “frozen reservoir” — normally pro- vides about a third of the wa- ter for the state’s farms and communities as it melts in the spring and summer and fills reservoirs and rivers.
Karla Nemeth, state wa- ter resources director, said the public should continue water conservation during a dry winter that included a near record-dry February.

Michael said: “He coached the right way, he won the right way and he always showed you respect. That was tops on his list.”
Rev. Tim Kutzmark that there was a paradox of Paul Mitchell in that he was a qui- et man who chose to live so much of his life publicly.
“He knew his voice could shape and animate so much and so many,” Kutzmark said. “There’s no question that Paul leaves behind an impact in so many arenas.”
None of Mitchell’s chil- dren spoke publicly at the celebration. But all four — sons Andy, Jeff and Dan and daughter Susan McKoy — along with Madeleine Mitchell lit candles in remembrance.
Another member of the family to speak was Monta Wager, Paul Mitchell’s young- er sister and only surviving sibling. She told stories of their childhood, and how Paul initially didn’t want to move from Vacaville to Reedley in the middle of his freshman year of high school.
“He wasn’t happy about that, but he didn’t say any- thing,” Wager said. “But when he moved, he absolutely loved

Mateo said people fear this death, the fear of being forgotten. He didn’t think his grandfather ever feared this second death.
“I like to believe that his deep connection with the planet and its inhabitants — both big and small —taught him one of life’s greatest lessons,”he said. “Much like our animal kingdom, Paul knew that our greatest leg- acy comes from the passing of our knowledge to future generations.”
Christian Martinez talked about his grandfather’s coach- ing skills, and how he stressed taking accountability.
“If you’ve given every- thing, only the outcome at the end of the game is actually out of your control,” he said. “You cannot control how your teammates play, how your op- ponents play. At the end of the day, the only thing you can do is make sure that you did ev- erything in your power to help
