West Nile virus mosquitoes collected in northeast Fresno
Contributed
The Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District last week noti- fied the Fresno County Department of Public Health of West Nile virus positive tests in adult mosquitoes collected from an area around por- tions of the 93710 zip code area near Fresno State.
“This confirmation is a strong reminder that everyone should take this disease seriously and should
take every precaution to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites,” says Leticia Ber- ber, health educator for the Fres- no County Department of Public Health.
The department of health rec- ommends that individuals contact their local mosquito control district regarding standing water or mos- quito problems, as well as to report any neglected swimming pools. Ne- glected pools are a major source of
mosquito production in urban and suburban areas.
Protect against mosquito bites and West Nile virus by practicing the “Three Ds”:
• Deet — Apply insect repellent containing Deet, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 accord- ing to label instructions. Repellents keep the mosquitoes from biting you. Insect repellents should not be used on children under two months of age.
• Dawn and Dusk — Mosquitoes usually bite in the early morning and evening so it is important to wear proper clothing and repellent if out- side during these times. Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mos- quitoes. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.
• Drain — Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property by emptying flower
pots, old car tires, buckets, and other containers. If you know of a swimming pool that is not being properly maintained, please contact your local mosquito and vector con- trol agency.
California’s West Nile virus web- site includes the latest information on West Nile virus activity in the state. All residents are encouraged to report dead birds on the website or by calling toll-free 1-877-WNV-BIRD (968-2473).

With the start of summer and warmer temperatures, the Fresno County Depart- ment of Public Health (FCDPH) and Department of Social Services (FCDSS) are cautioning swimmers to take steps to ensure water safety, including keeping a close watch on children and young adults. Drown- ing deaths among young children often happen when children access pools with- out supervision or when adults are distracted.
“Never leave children unattended in or near a pool, river, or lake, and never let children swim in canals or ponding basins,” said David Pomaville, Fresno County Department of Public Health Director. “Now is the time to take the necessary steps to prevent drownings wher- ever you and your family or friends gather for water recreation activities.”
According to the Water Safety Council, 20 to 30 peo- ple die from water-related injuries in Fresno County each year. Statistics show on average 10 of these vic- tims are children between the ages of 1 and 18, and 20 percent of them will drown
in family swimming pools and spas.
It is estimated that one out of every three Fresno homes has a swimming pool, and one out of four of these families report “close calls,” where a child may have drowned or been seriously injured if he or she had not been rescued.
The department of pub- lic health and department of social service would like to remind residents of the fol- lowing:
• Pools should have proper fencing with self- closing gates
• For pool security, close and lock or latch gates or doors every time they are used
• Never prop a gate or door open
• Remove or lock lad- ders when above ground pools are not in use
• For pool safety, moni- tor all children around pools • Be familiar with and monitor all possible pool
access points
• Designate one respon-
sible adult for every five children in the water

Rudy M. Lopez

There’s not a day that goes by that we don’t think of
you, our love for you is unconditional. We walk around
with heavy hearts and our pain seems to get harder.
On “Father’s Day”, was the day you left to “Stanford”
and, the 24th of June made it exactly six years, that
you’ve been gone. We miss your smile, your laugh-
ter, your beautiful face, we miss you all of you. You are more than just a memory, you’re “Our Son”. You will never be forgotten because I know we’ll meet again someday. We miss and love you so much.
