Boissonneault played a big role in the win, scoring in the bottom of the ninth and making a key play in the top of the sixth when he tagged Stallion Alonzo Tovar out at second when Tovar attempted to steal the base.
But that’s getting ahead of the story.
The Stallions entered the top of the ninth like conquering champions, like a team ready to make a statement before heading up to the next county in celebration. They wanted a win. Second up with one out was senior Ramon Uribe, who found a way to single off Harrell. Uribe made second as the next batter

was thrown out. Then he reached third, then home. Score was 4-3, Stallions.
Harrell struck out the next batter for the final out. The Apaches had one chance, just this final at-bat to make something work. They still had opportunity, albeit slim, and Madera South felt pretty flush
being one up.
But junior Alex
Rodriguez’s bomb deep into left field was caught and Avalos struck out. Two outs. Then Boissonneault singled and subsequently stole second. Third baseman Steven Martinez, a junior, singled and Boissonneault ran home, tying the game. Harrell grabbed a bat, got a hit and it was all over.
Martinez scored the winning run, his second on the night.
The Apaches went
nuts. The Stallions looked blindsided.
“I was just going to go all out,” Boissonneault said of his thoughts on base. “You can’t stop. You gotta go all out.”
Quinonez said he did
everything he could. “I’ve got to fight through every inning,” he said. Quinonez also has had to fight through some injuries but indicated he was ready for this week’s Visalia/ Tulare Invitational Easter Tournament. “We all ride or die for each other, no matter what.”
Quinonez mentioned the tough previous week the team experienced. He referred to back-to-back losses previous to the win against Madera South. The Apaches were 8-2 after the game. Those losses came
on March 16 to Madera in Madera, 5-2, and to arch rival Memorial on March 20 at home, 7-3.
Cuellar said the losses were tough on the team. But he said he had the Apaches out on the field practicing the day before the Madera South game — in the rain. “They were laughing,” he said. “We went back to having fun, putting team over self.
“I’m real proud of these guys. This is the momentum they need.”
Baseball is, of course, a team sport. But often one player burdens himself with a what-if situation, as in what if he hadn’t made that error, hit that ball farther, hadn’t have struck out.
And there were at least some who had been assuming that sort of
responsibility that night. However, that dark mood disappeared or was banished during the game against the Stallions. Maybe it will return like unwelcome guest Cousin Eddie in “Christmas Vacation,” driving up on the lawn with his battered RV. Maybe not.
Cuellar said before the game that he told his athletes to have fun.
And they did.
Quinonez said they “didn’t even acknowledge the rain” that day at practice. “We were ready for whatever came at us,” he said. “No excuses. We’re a brotherhood no matter what. I know my team will do (whatever it takes.)”
The game was epic. And it’s not just me saying this. (I know this is my first coverage of baseball this
season as was pointed out to me.)
Penner, the man who never sleeps, added this comment at the end, after I had completed my interviews. “One for the books, right there,” he said.
Some additional stats: Martinez had an RBI, Harrell had two, and Flores and junior Darrin Herring each had one. And one more quote. Before the game Harrell said this in response to the question of whether he liked this year’s team: “Yeah. We’re good.”
They are.
