Garden Checklist: Time to monitor rainfall and watch for freeze
Photos Courtesy / FITSNews
With December arriving and wet weather already pres- ent in the Central Valley, gardeners should take this time to monitor rainfall and adjust automatic sprinklers if necessary to avoid over watering.

The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gardeners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers and herbs look- ing beautiful all year long.
Now that December is here, tasks for the garden include moni- toring rainfall and ad- just automatic sprin- klers accordingly. If rainfall is adequate, warm- season grasses require no supplemen- tal irrigation.
Remember to spray stone-fruit, apple, pear and nut trees, flower- ing trees and roses with dormant oil spray.
And, now that the soil is cool and damp,
sow seeds of spring wildflowers such as the California poppy, clarkia and cornflower.
When it comes to pruning, remember to remove leaves from roses to force them into dormancy in prepara- tion for pruning next month.
Prune out fire blight infections. Cut the in- fected shoot or branch at its point of origin.
Fertilize cool-season annuals, perennials and vegetables with a light, high-nitrogen or organ- ic fertilizer.
This is not a big planting month unless you have purchased plants or bulbs and have not yet planted them.
Fruits and vegeta- bles: radishes, spinach, plant from seed.
Annuals: forget-me- not (Myosotis), Iceland poppy (Papaver nudi- caule), fairy primrose (Primula malacoides).
Enjoy these now, an- nuals and perennials: stock (Matthiola), Ice- land poppy (Papaver nudicaule).
Bulbs, corms, tu- bers: paperwhite (Nar- cissus).
Trees, shrubs, vines: heavenly bamboo (Nan- dina) Maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba).
Fruits and vegeta- bles: persimmons, po- tatoes, Savoy cabbage, snow peas.
Things to ponder, be alert for frost warnings
and cover tender plants when freezing tempera- tures are expected.
Apply a layer of mulch to protect roots of vulnerable plants. Amaryllis bulbs will bloom indoors and may do well planted outside with some shade and rich, well-drained soil.
