Sanger High closed out the cross country season in style, posting a 9th place finish for the girls and 12th place fin- ish for boys — paced by 10th place individual finisher Da- vid DeLoera — in the Divi- sion II races at the CIF State Championships on Nov. 27 at Fresno's Woodward Park.
Throngs of people jammed the 5,000-meter course layout at the annual state meet, and the Central Section D-II cham- pion Apaches teams turned in solid efforts despite relative inexperience at the state level for the girls and a bout of ill- ness for the boys.

Four Sanger High runners were bunched together at the 2.1 mile mark of the Division II race at the CIF State Championships at Fresno's Woodward Park on Nov. 27. Leah Mendibles (4475, right) was the Apaches' top finisher, placing 33rd in 18 minutes, 56.8 seconds.

Reedley High's Araceli Villarreal recorded a PR time of 20 minutes, 5.3 seconds at 5,000 meters to place 90th out of 157 runners in the state Division III girls race.

"My goal was to go top five today. It didn't really work out, but I'll take 10th," said DeLoera, who hopes to run for a Division 1 school with a preference of University of Colorado.

ishers were Myles Nicacio (53rd in 16:14.9), Salas (63rd, 16:22.3), Daniel Galvez (114th, 16:52.7), Emmanuel Vaca (137th, 17:09.3), Jonathan Mar- cial (162nd, 17:48.8) and Jared Borders (172nd, 18:04.7).
For the Sanger girls, Leah Mendibles turned in the top team finish by placing 33rd in 18:56.8. Nia Lamas and Nerey- da Alvarez both cracked the top 50, placing 45th (19:07.3) and 46th (19:08.3), respective- ly, while Sienna Bianchi was 52nd in 19:12.2. Other SHS finishers were Anayacsi Diaz (119th, 20:16.5), Malaia Alva- rez (133rd, 20:31.8) and Alex Vaca (151st, 21:02.0).
Reedley High's Araceli Villarreal was her school's lone state qualifier, running in the Division III race. She followed her eighth place section showing with a per- sonal best time of 20:05.3 seconds to finish 90th out of 157 runners.
  208 points (average time 19 minutes, 21 seconds), tied with Monte Vista from the North Coast for eighth place but losing a tiebreaker, while the boys scored compiled 301 points (average time 16:28) to miss a Top 10 finish by 33

 Basketball heats up with winter tournament action

The winter vacation break has yet to ar- rive for regional high schools, but basketball teams are getting into the swing of holiday sea- son tournament action.
The Immanuel High boys are hosting their annual four-day Tour- nament of Champions through Saturday, Dec. 4, in Reedley, while the Dinuba and Sanger boys teams are participating in tournaments in Kings- burg and Ojai, respec- tively. both of those tour- naments run through Saturday, Dec. 4. Next Wednesday, Dec. 8, Di- nuba hosts Sanger and immanuel among other schools at the Andrew Bedoya Holiday Classic.
The Reedley (x-x) and Sanger (x-x) girls teams both are playing in the Selma Shootout tournament now through Saturday, Dec. 4.
BOYS BASKETBALL Emps 2-0 after rout of Mission Oak

Nov. 24 at Nicholson Gym, the Apaches (2- 0) blew open the game with a 26-9 second quar- ter run. Guard Andrew Lopez scored 22 points while forward Kaleb Cole scored 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and pulled down six re- bounds.
Luke Karle collected six points, seven assists and six steals for the Apaches, who hosted Frontier High in a non- league game on Nov. 30.
Pirates travel to Sierra Pacific
Reedley (1-3) played its first game in 10 days on Nov. 30 when it host- ed Orange Cove (results
were unavailable at press time). The Pirates will play Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Hanford against Sierra Pacific, in their first game back at the gym where they won a tournament champion- ship in December 2019. GIRLS BASKETBALL Tulare Union 44, Reedley 33

Kiene Prendez scored 15 points and pulled down four rebounds in the Emperors' 74-39 rout of Mission Oak on Nov. 23. The junior guard is in his second season on varsity, and also scored 15 points in a season-opening win for Dinuba (2-0 entering the Kingsburg Tournament).
