Did the Orosi Cardinals already find the next Jerry Huerta? Possibly.
In his debut at starting tailback, junior Dominic Martinez ran for 174 yards on 19 carries, finding pay-dirt three times to help the Cardi- nals beat host Coalinga, 31-28.
The Cardinals controlled the first half, scoring three times unanswered. Orosi’s first score was a 30-yard field goal by junior Elmer Berrue- co, followed by a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Evan Lara to classmate Aid- an Rodriguez.
The next three scores came at the hands, and feet, of Martinez, rushing for his first touchdown with just over five minutes left in the first half. He would find the end zone again with just over

a 72-yard touchdown re- ception, putting his team within one score.
Dinuba’s second half struggles continued on of- fense as they punted back to the Panthers with just over a minute left in the third quar- ter after yet another third- and-long.
“It seemed we were third-and-long all night long,” said Barajas.
Starting at their own 22-yard line, Porterville took their momentum and began to drive down the field. Two minutes into the final quar- ter, Nava took it in himself on a 4-yard quarterback keeper. The point after tied the game for a third time at 42-42.
After in exchange of possessions, Dinuba found themselves at midfield with just over five minutes re- maining on the clock.
The drive was cut short, however, after an intentional grounding call on Magaña forced a third-and-long. Por- terville then intercepted the ball a second time, taking the ball down to the Emperor’s 41 yard-line with just over two minutes left in the game.
Using the clock and the field to their advantage, Por- terville called a time out on third and six, as the Panthers were on the 22 yard-line. The next play sealed the game as, once again, Nava connected with Ellis. This time Nava hit
a minute left in the half. After Coalinga made a run in the third quarter, drawing as close to the Cardinals as 24- 21, Martinez extended Orosi’s lead to 31-21 with about six minutes left in the game with his third rushing touchdown. The Horned Toads scored another touchdown with less than a minute left in the game, but Orosi was able to
hold on for the win. Martinez added 14 yards
receiving in Friday’s game, giving him a total of 188 yards. Lara was 9 of 18 and threw for 131 yards, throw- ing for one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed for 12 yards.
The Cardinals will have a bye tomorrow. They host Granite Hills on Friday, Sept. 6 in Orosi’s home opener. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Ellis on a fade route to the left in the end zone.
Ellis finished the game with 112 rushing yards with one rushing touchdown and 241 receiving yards with four touchdown catches.
On the contrary, Di- nuba’s offense was held to just 16 yards rushing.
“We had a hard time try- ing to get to the secondary level,” Barajas explained. “We have to just get back to our fundamentals. The team still needs to gel and grow as a team.”
Senior Dinuba High quarterback Josh Magaña finished the game 23 of 40 for 283 yards, five touch- downs and two intercep- tions.
Dinuba will take on Red- wood High tomorrow night, pitting former coaching col- leagues against one another. Redwood is under the direc- tion of former Emperor’s head coach Kevin Schar- ton, who this year returned to his alma mater to coach the Rangers. Barajas previ- ously served as Scharton’s defensive coordinator at Dinuba High before taking over as the Emperor’s head coach this year.
“I think the kids will be up for the game,” Barajas said about tomorrow night’s matchup with Redwood. “For the community, it’s going to be a great game.”
The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on KFRE Channel 59.

The revamped Imman- uel High Eagles changed starting quarterbacks for 2019, but last year’s hold- over proved to be even more valuable in his new role.
Senior Matt Tiger, now playing running back and receiver on offense as soph- omore Hector Davila takes over signalcaller duties, ac- counted for 99 yards of to- tal offense rushing and re- ceiving and played a part in three turnovers on defense — including a 32-yard fum- ble return for the game’s first score. That fueled the Eagles to a 30-18 victory over the visiting Roosevelt High Roughriders in the Aug. 23 season opener at County Line Stadium.
“Our defense was solid and our offense stepped up and made big plays when we needed them,” said the Eagles’ Drew Halstead af- ter picking up the victory in his head coaching debut.
Tiger turned in a solid performance on both sides of the ball. He rushed for 70 yards on 18 carries and caught two passes for 29 yards, and defensively he collected an interception and forced fumble. But it was his first quarter play that set the tone for Im- manuel.
After the Eagles gave up the balls on downs, Ti- gers pounced on a scram- bling Roosevelt quarter- back, snatched the football from his possession and raced 32 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 lead. Roo- sevelt responded with a touchdown, missing a two- point conversion try, to pull within a point before the Eagles drove 75 yards for their second TD.
Davila — who gained 75 yards on 11 rushes and threw for 115 yards, fin- ished off the drive with an 8-yard scoring run. The Ea- gles spent much of the sec- ond quarter in Roughrider territory, getting a field goal just before halftime to take a 17-6 lead.
The visitors cut the defi- cit to 17-12 midway through the third, missing another two-point try. Immanuel got good field position after the ensuing kickoff, and Da- vila ran it in from 3 yards out with a minute left in the period to build the lead to 23-12 after a missed PAT. Another rushing touchdown – and missed two-point try — by Roosevelt made it 23- 18 with seven minutes left to play.
Immanuel then got an important insurance score when Davila found Trace Pires crossing over the mid- dle, and the senior complet- ed a 45-yard scoring play to give IHS the final 12-point cushion with four minutes remaining. The defense made one more stop and the offense ran out the clock.
Davila completed 8 of 17 passes and also had one catch for 9 yards. Fellow sophomore Holden Thomas also saw time at quarter- back, connecting on 3 of 5 for 37 yards.
Junior Winston Williams had three catches for 35 yard, and defensively col- lected a sack and forced a fumble. Linebacker Mi- chael Kawagoe also added a sack on defense. The Ea- gles had 298 total yards of offense.
On Friday, Aug. 30, Im- manuel goes after its sec- ond win in a 6:30 p.m. road game at Farmersville High. The Aztecs lost their opener by a 62-0 score on Aug. 23 at Exeter High.
