purchased from the Kia dealership in Selma, where Kumar also has a dental practice — carried a 20-year, 200,000-mile engine war- ranty. “Wow, I so need that,” Martinez said.
Having a dependable vehicle allows Mar- tinez to take her daughter to work and young- er son, Ian, to school.
Kumar said the gift was a new way for him of looking at how God works.
“We have the richest, mightiest nation. We’re blessed,” he said. “There are parts of the world where there is so much misery and suffering going on. We are in heaven. This is not short of heaven.

The Dec. 20 article on the arrest of 31st District Assem- bly Member Joaquin Aram- bula on suspicion of willful cruelty to a child involving a spanking incident with Aram- bula’s 7-year-old daughter.
The article incorrectly stated that the child was no longer in contact with Ar-

“There may be a method in the way of God’s will. He will answer your prayers one way or another.”
Kumar told Martinez to be grateful to God at her blessing and to act in kind to some- one else.
“One day, when you get an opportunity to do the same thing, do it.” Martinez quickly said “and I will!”
Earlier that same day, Kumar and Reed- ley Family Dental organized the bicycle giveaway at Tri-County Medical Transport in south Reedley. A total of 50 bicycles were given to children ages 5 to 10 years.
Looking on as Kumar presented the car was Reedley Family Dental workers and of- fice manager Hector Perez.

The internet is rife with ads and links leading to pic- tures of celebrities and “mir- acle” products that promise easy weight loss, whiter teeth or disappearing wrinkles. You may be enticed to try these products through a “risk-free” trial: Just enter your name, ad- dress and credit card number, and the product will be on its way for only a nominal ship- ping and handling charge.
However, an in-depth in- vestigative study by Better Business Bureau finds that many of these free trial of- fers are not free. The BBB receives complaints from free trial offer victims nearly ev- ery day and warns consumers to use extreme caution before agreeing to the offer and en- tering their credit card num- ber.
The investigative study — “Subscription traps and deceptive free trials scam millions with misleading ads and fake celebrity endorse- ments” — looks at how free trial offers ensnare consum- ers in so-called “subscription traps” that hook them for ex- pensive shipments of products they did not explicitly agree to buy. It digs into the scope of the problem, who is behind it,
and the need for law enforce- ment and consumer education to address the issue.
Many free trial offers come with fine print, bur- ied on the order page or by a link, that gives consumers only a short period of time to receive, evaluate and return the product to avoid being charged oftentimes $100 or more. In addition, the same hidden information may state that by accepting the offer, you’ve signed up for monthly shipments of the products and such fees will be charged to your credit card. Many people find it difficult to contact the seller to stop recurring charg- es, halt shipments and get re- funds. Such obscure terms in these offers often violate Fed- eral Trade Commission (FTC) and BBB guidelines on adver- tising, as do the satisfaction guarantees that are ubiquitous in free trial offers.
The study found that ma- ny of the celebrity endorse- ments in these ads are fake. Dozens of celebrity names are used by these frauds without their knowledge or permis- sion, ranging from Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres to Mike Rowe, Tim Allen and Sally Field. Sometimes the fine print even admits these endorsements are not real.
“Free trial offers relying on deception have infested the internet, especially with social media,” said Blair Loo- ney, BBB Central California/ Inland Empire Counties presi- dent and CEO. “Those running these scams are counting on consumers to be so dazzled by celebrities and big prom- ises that they fail to read the fine print. It’s imperative that consumers carefully read the terms and conditions of such
