Schools wait for update from CIF
By Will Goldbeck
For The Times
The 2019 women’s golf season at Reedley College was the best in school history with a second place finish in the state and a champi- onship in the Big 8 Con- ference and in Northern California.
The 2020-21 season will probably go In the record book as the cra- ziest.
Head Coach Scott Stark and seven Lady Tigers (four sopho- mores and three incom- ing freshmen) are one of only six teams in Cal- ifornia playing women’s
golf due to the pandem- ic. Big 8 Conference ri- val Taft College is the only other Northern California team and are joined by four South- ern California schools. Opting out of women’s golf is College of the Canyons, the defending state champion.
Taft will join the Ti- gers in the Big 8 Confer- ence team. Each team will probably have three home duals against each other. Reedley will also face Bakersfield several times in an attempt to cut down on travel. “We don’t want to play Taft in a dual all the time,” said Stark.
The new season be- gins on Monday, Feb. 8. Stark said he is still try- ing to solidify a 10-match schedule. “We are trying to get the freshman girls oriented into the sport,” said the veteran coach, who will also be coach- ing the Tiger men this spring. “We want to try and do something that is not so stressful.”
Stark wants to thank Reedley College Presi- dent Jerry Buckley and Athletic Director David Santesteban for their work in getting the Ti- gers back on the course.
Four girls are back from the 2019 team.
Leading the way will
be four sophomores, led by Alyssa Bendure (Clo- vis North), who will prob- ably be the Tigers’ num- ber one player. At num- ber two will be Mya Chao (Golden West, Visalia) while McKenzie Quinn (Clovis East) will prob- ably be the number three Tiger. Kayla Hernandez (Paso Robles) will be in the number four spot.
Last year’s number one player, Monica Yu of San Diego, joined the Boston University roster last June.
Freshman Megan Hansen (Reedley) will play at number five while Cynthia Reyes (Golden West, Visalia)
is at number six. Fresh- man America Maples (Clovis North) came out for golf for the first time after playing softball in high school.
Best Pizza in Town!
Women's golf is the only Sports1 to field a team at RC. “We want to do the best we can to make it right for the girls,” said Stark.

Cross country is lone sport able to qualify for Season 1
By Jon Earnest
Mid Valley Times
As Central Section high school athletic programs wait to hear about the status of prep sports seasons for this spring because of the ongo- ing COVID-19 pandemic, the only certainty right now is that cross country is the only sports cleared to conduct a lim- ited schedule in "CIF Season 1" sometime after Jan. 25.
Valley counties continue in the Purple Tier (widespread) category, with no immediate end in sight. According to the California Interscholastic Fed- eration, the sports scheduled to compete in Season 1 sports from January through April are foot-

snowboarding, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field. Cross country is the lone sports allowed in Season 1, as the other section sports won't compete until Season 2 (March through June).
Football, volleyball and wa- ter polo aren't cleared by the state and CIF to compete until California reaches the moder- ate (orange) level. For now, baseball and softball will be able to compete in the substan- tial (red) level. In addition, bas- ketball, competitive cheer and wrestling all are in the most re- strictive minimal (yellow level).
Brian Penner, Sanger High athletic director, said cross country teams in the region are tentatively forming a lim- ited schedule of meets, all tak- ing place on a smaller scale. Any schedules would not be re- leased until the State CIF office makes an announcement some- time this week or next week.
