Reedley took a step for- ward last week toward get- ting a large funeral home fa- cility across the street from Reedley Cemetery.
Michael and Karen Fran- zen, owners and managers of Dopkins Funeral Chapel of Dinuba, were joined by city leaders on March 14 for a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of a new funeral chapel and event center on South Reed Avenue, across the street from Reedley Cem- etery.
The new facility will in- clude a main building with full funeral services avail- able. Construction is expected to last six months. There also will be an event center and additional parking. A unique feature the site will have is a pet crematorium, the only one of it’s kind in the cen-
tral San Joaquin Valley. Also planned is a niche garden for cremations.
Co-owner Karen Franzen said the facility allows Dop- kins to better serve Reed- ley residents. Currently, the company has a downtown business office to organize fu- nerals for Reedley residents, with the main funeral chapel in Dinuba.
“Even though we’ve been around since 1895, we have to keep changing,” she said. “We need to progress with the times to serve the fami- lies with what they need to- day, not with what they need 50 years ago.”
Michael Franzen shared about the long process toward building the new facility.
“We first talked about coming over here. This was the spot that we immediately wanted,” he said. “We thought it would be great to be here,
but it was unavailable at the time. We considered lots of others around time, but none of them really worked well. And lo and behold, it ended up being this spot.”
Michael Franzen said one
of the attractions for the site will be its immediate access to the Reedley Cemetery. He said the planned expansion at the cemetery will put its main
