Two new employees with Reedley agencies were introduced to the Reedley City Council at the April 24 meeting. Amber Vaquera,
left, is the new human resources technician with the city. Michael Velasquez, right, is the Reedley Police Department’s newest officer. Vaquera was selected from more than 100 applicants to the position which works with payroll, benefits and employee training. Velasquez, a Reedley High School graduate, started with the department as a Police Explorer and Cadet. He then was a reserve community officer before attending and graduating from the police academy.

Michael Ratzlaff of Visalia, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2018. He was 62. He was a self- employed chef.
Michael is predeceased by his parents Oilz and Dorothy Ratzlaff.
He is survived by his sister, Jane Ratzlaff of Fresno.

Reedley police arrested a 43-year-old Reedley man May 4 after the man allegedly swung a makeshift weapon at officers.
Jose Javier Reyes was tak- en into custody following the in- cident shortly after 3:15 p.m. in the 1100 block of South I Street. Officers arriving on the scene said Reyes was standing on a canal bank and carrying what’s called “flails” — a chain with barbed wire coiled in a ball.
According to Officer Ce- sar Cardenas, Reyes began to swing the weapon at officers. The officers were able to dis- arm Reyes and arrest him with- out suffering injury.
Reyes was booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of assault against a peace of-
ficer and assault with a deadly weapon that isn’t a gun. Reyes later was detained on a psychi- atric hold.
Also on May 4, officers ar- rested a 22-year-old Reedley man on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly pulled a knife on an- other man.
Oswaldo Esparza was identified by witnesses as the
man who pulled a knife on the victim, who was armed with a baseball bat while defend- ing himself, during a 10:45 a.m. confrontation in the 900 block of East Dinuba Avenue, according to Cardenas.
Esparza was booked into the Fresno County Jail on the assault charge and a related gang charge. He still was in custody as of May 8.

Jeneen Catalina (Garcia) Bernal
April 10, 1972 ~ April 29, 2018
Jeneen Catalina (Garcia) Bernal was born on April 10, 1972 in Fresno, California to Joseph and Monica Garcia. Jeneen died on April 29, 2018, at the age of 46. Jeneen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jerry I. Bernal. ey are now together in Heaven. Jeneen is survived by her children, Louis M. Gonzales and his ancé Elizabeth Crouch, Genevieve M. Bernal and Jeremy J. Bernal, and her grand-daughter, Brielle S. Bernal. She is also survived by her brother, Brian J. Garcia, his wife, Jennifer, and her nephews, Nicholas and Nolan Garcia, as well as her aunts, uncles and many cousins. Jeneen worked as a correctional o cer prior to her retirement. She was a loving mother and great friend to many. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, eating Mexican food, and
having fun in Tahoe.
