Yet, Mason’s success with raising cattle has given him a high profile within the industry.
Clint Mefford, American Angus Association spokesman, said it’s not easy doing what Mason and others do, showing their cattle in competition. “To excel in beef showmanship is to spend countless hours practicing, preparing and caring for projects,” he said via email. “The National Junior Angus Showmanship Contest represents the best- of-the-best at the peak of their careers. It is considered to be the pinnacle of beef cattle showmanship contests in the country, and perhaps the world.”
Similar praise came closer to home.
“Mason is an outstanding young man,” said Randy Perry, a Fresno State professor and chair of animal sciences at the university, via email. “The American Angus Association has an outstanding

cattle. He’s aging out. “I still have stuff to do,” he said.
Mason will continue pampering his herd. He gave Lula and the others snacks. Angie used the word “pampered” to describe the diets and lifestyle of their herd.
Mason does more than just attend college, work a farm and drive heavy equipment. He also cooks.
Mason and other California competitors won first place in the senior-other beef division at the All- American Certified Angus Beef Cook-Off at the 2019 National Junior Angus Show. His fellow chefs included Tyler Coleman of Modesto, Charlize Guess of Tulare and Calista Schreck of Placerville. The Angus Association said they prepared “Fajita Fiesta” and also claimed top honors in the recipe and showmanship categories.

Tarr also has a hand in raising animals. Angie said both boys are products of 4-H and FFA. “Tremendous programs,” she said. “Our kids have been blessed.”
Hayden won some regional acclaim when he sold a 255-pound hog named Sparky at auction. He raised an estimated $36,000 at the Big Fresno Fair last year when people learned he was donating the proceeds to the Honor Flight, which sends veterans to see war memorials in Washington, D.C., according to the Fresno Bee.
The Tarr ranch comprises about 40 acres and additional leased land. Angie said her son works hard and also had a lot of help from people “looking out for him.”
Mason said he plans to help others. “I’ve sold to a few different individuals from different high schools,” he said. “I’ve tried to help them.”
And he’s wrapping up the job of showing

Perry, a family friend who has kids close in age to Mason and his little brother Hayden, 17, said those involved
with the association also learn a lot about the nutritional qualities of beef and the desires of the American beef consumer.
“We started buying cattle from him (Perry),” Mason said. “We kinda went from there.”
Mason’s a busy guy. He had just come from shaking almonds near his house and already had been in Reedley, where he attends college, and to Fresno.
He drives for a heavy equipment contractor and has very little free time. For this interview, he carved out an hour before heading off on another assignment.
He said he intends to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and major in business agriculture. “That’s the plan,” Mason said. “One day I’d like to run my own business. Whether it’s ag or construction, we shall see.”
