The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local garden- ers who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
Enjoy the balmy June evenings with a poolside barbecue, homemade ice-cream or outdoor din- ing.
Tasks for this time of year include making sure that sure your water- ing schedule conforms to new guidelines. Also, don't forget to check sprinkler timet settings at least once a month.
Water citrus being careful not to overwater. Be sure mower blades are sharp. Clean cuts to the lawn reduce stress
and the need for water. Pruning, remember that fire blight is best pruned out in winter but if the infection is spread- ing rapidly in a pear or apple tree during the the growing season, prune out the infected growth
as soon as it appears. Fertilize almond, ap- ple, peach, nectarine and
plum.
Apply a light feeding
to summer flowers and vegetables. Water thor- oughly after application.
Spring planting sea- son is over; keep recent plantings and transplants well-watered.
Enjoy these now, an- nuals and perennials: Santa Barbara Daisy (Erigeron), blanket flow- er (Gaillardia), sunflow- er (Helianthus), straw- flower (Helichrysum). Bulbs, corms, tubers: gi- ant allium. Trees, shrubs, vines: Butterfly bush (Buddleja), Desert Wil- low (Chilopsis linearis), Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), morning glory (Ipomoea), lantana.
Fruits and vegetables: figs, potatoes, squash, to- matoes.
Things to ponder, a walk around the garden just before dark can be a good opportunity to hunt for snails as they emerge to feed at night.
If it rains in June, ex- pect fruit damage.

I know a handful of minorities, myself in- cluded, who would nev- er stand for looting or rioting.
I know a number of people of all colors, white, Mexican, black, Asian, whatever color
or nationality they are, who would never con- done that behavior.
Its time we start to focus on our similari- ties rather than our dif- ferences.
We've been fighting over differnces for so long that we've failed to see how many similari- ties we do share.
