With only two return- ing varsity players, Dinu- ba High girls water polo coach Sergio Hernandez has his work cut out this year.
Hernandez lost a solid core of players including goalie Natalie Ceballos.
“We lost a really good goalie last year in Nata- lie,” Hernandez said.
Help filling the void is sophomore Kathryn Arreola.
“She is really stepping it up, its super exciting and she loves it,” Hernan- dez said. “We’ll see what she can do this season.”
Hernandez will be banking on returners, Vanessa Hernandez and Serenity Ramirez, to help lead the team. Both ath- letes have played varsity since their freshman year and will play an integral role this year as Dinuba welcomes 10 newcomers to the varsity level, ac-
cording to Hernandez. “It is tough,” Hernan- dez said. “They have the foundation of the game now its just gaining confi- dence and that experience
on the varsity level.” Hernandez said he’s excited for the season to
get underway.
“I’m excited and look
forward to the season,” Hernandez said. “Vanessa and Serenity are going to be pretty good out there. Our approach this season, is to learn from every game and learn from our mistakes and grow.”
DHS boys have depth
Dinuba High boys wa- ter polo coach Eric Guz- man is glad to have a de- cent number of players on the roster.
A season ago, the Emperors did not have enough players to field a junior varsity team as Guzman was left with 10 players on varsity leaving

Cecelia Mulligan.
“The nice thing about
having a young team is that we’ll be able to grow together,” Tatami said. “When they grow together they’ll learn the successes as well as the failures, they’ll be able to overcome that.”
Tatami said the return- ing Pirates have extra motivation to bounce back from a quarterfinal round playoff loss to Madera South after another un- beaten league season that included 54 consecutive set victories.
“Our expectation is still continue to dominate [the NYL],” Tatami said. “I know that some of the teams are going to con- tinue to improve.”
Haney and Betancourt said bouncing back strong from last season’s finish is a motivating tool.
“Last year was defi- nitely disappointing, but it will serve as motivation for us,” said Haney.
“Making it past the
him shorthanded for sub- stitutions.
With 18 players on the roster, Guzman can breathe a little easier.
“I actually have almost the whole team from last year returning,” Guzman said.
The team will be led by senior Cole Schott and junior Mateo Plascencia.
Guzman said Plascenc- ia will be at the guard or wing position while Schott will play point or hole set.
Another returning player for DHS that could have a good year is junior Nic Diaz.
“He made a few shots that probably shouldn’t have been made, but he made them. Somehow he found a window and put it in there,” Guz- man said. “He helped us out especially on the weak side. He’s a key feature for sure. Guzman is also high on returning goalie junior Diego Solis.

second round of playoffs is our goal. [Last year] will make us improve more and work harder,” said Betancourt.
Reedley has non- league matches with local rivals Dinuba, Kingsburg and Selma and will see Division 2 competition in tournament play. But a big non-league match will be against defending Division 5 state champi- on Washington Union on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at RHS gym.
Tatami said the team’s
goal remains the same as always: win league, go deep into the playoffs and play together as a unit.
“The faces change, but what we expect and how they play never changes,” he said.
The Pirates’ season opener is Thursday, Aug. 22 at Hanford West. The home opener is Tuesday, Aug. 27, against Dinuba.

Reedley High returning starters Lauren Betencourt, left, and Madison Haney will look to lead their team to another champship this season.
“He’s improved a lot from last year,” Guzman said. “He’s a lot more con- fident.”
Dinuba is tentatively scheduled to open its sea- son at home on Tuesday
