The flames billowing from a backyard proper- ty in the 100 block of 9th Street in Orange Cove on the afternoon of Aug. 12 were nearly 15 feet tall and moving quickly due to the thick brush, de-
bris, and vehicles fueling them and at one point be- came too dangerous even for the fire personnel on scene.
"We did have to stand by for a while," said Ed- ward Hernandez, Battal- ion Chief with the Orange Cove Fire Department. "There was a power line
burning up, it was arch- ing in the back yard, so we had to wait for PG&E to turn off the line so we could get in there."
Hernandez said the call initially came in as a reported grass fire, how- ever, when firefighters arrived they found a fully involved debris fire inside a property moving quick- ly toward a residence.
"It was threatening two structures, it was burning very hot be- cause there was lots of debris and brush in the backyard," said Her- nandez. "There were no structures on fire, and
we were able to contain the fire to vehicles, some sheds, and debris in the backyard."
Frank Rodriguez lives nearby and at first thought it was a home on fire due to the amount of smoke.
"We were inside the house and one of my grandkids looked out the window," he said. "He told us to look outside the win- dow and that's when we seen all the smoke."
"We were on 11th Street, so I started walk- ingthisway, anditlooked
