The Sanger Apaches varsity boys’ soccer team suffered their first loss of the season on Fri- day, giving up two goals in the second period as the team fell to Central High, 4-2.
Sanger High junior Michael Esparza scored both of the Apaches’ goals in the first pe- riod, as the Apaches were able to match the Grizzlies goal-for-goal to take a 2-2 tie into the break.
But Central (8-2-2) scored two unanswered goals in the second peri- od to walk away with the win and hand the Apach- es their only defeat, thus far, of the season.
Senior Luis Villegas and sophomore Julio Hernandez each had an
assist in the Apaches loss.
With the loss, the Apaches overall record went to 13-1-2.
Up until last week, maxpreps.com had the Apaches ranked as the No. 1 team in both the Division 2 and the Cen- tral Section, just ahead of rival Reedley High. This week, those rank- ings have swapped as the prep school sports website now ranks Reedley (9-0-5) as the No. 1 team in both rankings, with Sanger ranked No. 2.
Dinuba (10-3-2) is ranked as No. 3 in Divi- sion 2 on maxpreps.com.
The Apaches will travel to Fresno on Tues- day to take on Bullard in a conference matchup. The game is set to kick off at 5 p.m.

According to EJ Diaz’ father Esteban Diaz, all it took for his son to decide on where he was going to com- pete and receive his college education was a visit to the campus of Fresno Pacific University.
“We pretty much knew once we walked the cam- pus,” said Diaz. “It just felt like home.”
EJ Diaz climbed up the
Central Sequoia League rankings in recent years in both shot put and discus. He finished second in league in both events last year. The se- nior will compete this spring in both events with the bene- fit of having throwing coach Callan Duffy of the Fresno Flyers Track Club.
Diaz will be looking to improve on his personal bests of 48’ 10 1⁄2 inches in shot put and 139’ 10” in dis- cus.
