erview,” he said. “Riverview is thrilled to be recognized for our outstanding educational pro- grams and welcoming climate that ensure that our students will be successful.”
This school year, Riverview has 487 students in grades kin- dergarten through eighth. The 36-member staff includes 20 teachers, an instructional coach and a learning director as well as classified employees, who include a librarian.
The state said that schools that applied for the 2018 honor were eligible based on perfor- mance and progress in areas that include test scores and progress by English learners.
Darnell, who became prin- cipal in the 2017-18 year, said that one of the Riverview’s strengths is its “foundational skills” approach to literacy. The school also is known for its teacher collaboration and parent involvement.
John Ahlin, who became principal of Reedley High School in 2017-18, before that served as Riverview’s princi- pal for six years.
“Riverview School ensures that students are successful on a daily basis by providing a nurturing environment with highly effective teachers and
staff who are willing to meet students’ needs,” Ahlin said. “This is accomplished through the support of involved par- ents that unify the Riverview community.”
A recognition ceremony for all the California Distin- guished School honorees will be held on May 3 in Anaheim. The other selected Fresno County schools are in Clovis Unified, Fresno Unified and Sanger Unified.
On Tuesday morning, Darnell and Riverview’s learning director Greg Visser and John Campbell, superin- tendent of the Kings Canyon Unified School District, vis- ited each classroom to share
the news with teachers and students. Darnell said that the campus is excited about the award.
“There’s been a lot of hard work,” he said.
Campbell said he was “very pleased that the River- view students, staff and com- munity have been recognized by the state of California for their outstanding accomplish- ments.
“I believe Riverview rep- resents all of our schools for the distinguished advances that are being made in edu- cating our students, increas- ing achievement levels and ensuring a positive school climate.”

God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
