Reedley’s Babe Ruth baseball all-stars teams put on competitive showings in Central California State tournament play last week, but all three squads ultimately were eliminated in their respective age brackets.
The 15-year-old stars turned in the best performance, going 2-2 and coming within two wins from a berth in the finals at Santa Maria’s Elks Field. Reedley was eliminated in an 8-4 loss to Madera on July 7, following a 9-8 victory over San Benito earlier in the day on a walk-off hit by Mike Rios.
Reedley bounced back from a 5-3 open- ing loss to Delano on July 5 by defeating the KerWest Lions, 13-6, on July 6. Will Gagnon drove in four runs, a little more than a week after collecting three hits in a District 3 tour- ney game against the Kerman team. Gagnon collected three of the team’s seven hits in the loss to Delano, which scored three runs in a decisive sixth inning rally. Gagnon also struck out four in four innings pitched against Delano.
Reedley’s 14-year-old all-stars dropped both their games in the Central State tourney at Madera High School — a 2-0 loss to Han- ford on July 5 followed by a 1-0 setback against Madera on July 6. Reedley collected five hits in the elimination loss to Madera, but stranded eight baserunners and the hosts pushed across
a run in the fifth inning.
Second baseman JJ Juarez collected two
hits while Aeneas Vargas, Sam Rodriguez and Alex Gonzalez all had one hit against Madera. Landon Kehoe pitched 4 1/3 innings, scatter- ing five hits and striking out three while yield- ing the game’s lone run. Vargas and Gutierrez had the lone hits against Hanford while Juarez pitched four innings, striking out five and scat- tering four hits.
At the 13-year-old Central State tourney in Bakersfield, Reedley won its opening game, 4-3 over Madera on July 5, before getting out- scored 7-2 against Lodi on July 6. Reedley then was eliminated in a 10-9 loss in nine innings to host Northwest Bakersfield on July 7.
Ethan Clark pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings in the win over Madera, but Reedley needed a walkoff RBI from Andres Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory. Darren Ortiz went 2 for 4, Jacob Silva was 1 for 3 with two runs knocked in while Richie Camacho was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Ortiz pitched five innings against Lodi, al- lowing four earned runs while going 1 for 3 with an RBI. Brayden Rhodes, Silva, Pierce Delport and Camacho also collected hits. Rhodes pitched 6-plus innings against Bakers- field, allowing four earned runs.
