MVT Staff Report
Six young members of the Sanger Boxing Club competed while three captured belts in their weight class at a Gold and Silver States Tournament for registered boxers at the
Primm Valley Resort near Las Vegas on Aug. 6-8.
Capturing belts from Sanger were Ricardo Pimen- tal, Alyssa Zamarano and Pe- dro Lucero, all 14 years old. Zamarano started with the club in 2018, Pimentel in 2019 and Lucero in 2020.
In addition, Mario Garcia Jr. (13), Isiz Zamorano (16)
and Alexander Garcia (11) all registered and competed at the Nevada tournament.
"All these kids work hard, and are determined and fo- cused," club officials said. "They give 110 percent every day at practice and motivate each other."
The boxers' coach, Mario Garcia, started as a volunteer
with the club in the summer of 2018 and officially took over September 2019. Other club coaches are David Pollastrini and David Valenzuela, who has many years of experience.
Valenzuela trains boxer Manuel "Manzo" Cortes (aka Chaparitto), a pro fighter who trains at the gym and motivates the younger fighters. Other
club volunteers are Carina Garcia, Jenny Pimentel, Albert Zamorano and Saul Aguilar.
The Sanger Boxing Club is located at 9th and L streets, and trains weekdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The club has helped children stay out of violence, drugs and alcohol abuse while getting in shape and further- ing their passion for boxing.
