MVT Staff Report
A day after a heart- breaking loss to Selma High dropped them to 1-3 in Central Sequoia League basketball play, the Immanuel High boys snapped a three-game los- ing streak at the expense of the Golden West Trail- blazers.
Winston Williams scored 23 points, nine in the third quarter, and the Eagles (9-8) dominated the first and fourth quarters during 74-55 victory over the visitors from Visalia in a Jan. 10 non-league contest at Immanuel High. The Eagles bounced back from a deflating 76- 75 setback to Selma, after the Bears roared back from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun the hosts on a last-second basket by Aaron Blancas.
Immanuel outscored visiting Golden West by an 18-5 count in the open- ing quarter — getting 3-point baskets from Jo- nah Tolpezninkas and Ry- an Chavez to jump ahead. The Trailblazers crept within seven points af- ter three quarters before the Eagles iced the vic- tory with a 17-5 run over the final eight minutes. Williams had six points
while Shawn Rodgers (13 points) added four points and Amren Purewal (12 points) scored five points in the period. Max Perez scored all eight of his points for Immanuel in the second quarter.
Against Selma, the Eagles had a 72-59 lead with a little more than three minutes to play, but Blancas scored the next seven points to cut the deficit to 10, 74-64 with two minutes left. Joey Ramirez sank a 3-pointer, and after Selma got the ball back Blancas scored on a traditional three-point play to make it 74-70 with a little over a minute remaining. After the Eagles were unable to score, Blancas sand- wiched four made free throws around a foul shot by Purewal, cutting the IHS lead to 75-74.
Immanuel then missed a free throw in the wan- ing seconds, and Blan- cas capped off a sizzling 16-point quarter (he fin- ished the night with 33 points) with a basket to beat the buzzer and drop the Eagles three games back in the league race. Williams finished with 29 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, while Rodgers added 16 points and Tolpe-
zninkas scored 11 points. The Eagles began the week with a 68-60 home loss to the Roosevelt Rough Riders on Jan. 7.
