Ontiveros congratulates fellow council members Hurtado, Martinez for their respective victories
By Rick Curiel
Mid Valley Times
Sanger’s Mayor-Elect Eli Ontiveros took a brief opportunity at the Nov. 5 city council meeting to thank the peo- ple of Sanger for voting for him and to congratulate current Mayor Pro Tem Daniel Martinez and District 1 Coun- cilmember Esmeralda Hurtado on be- ing re-elected.
“I look forward to working with you and moving this city forward,” the Mayor-Elect told both his colleagues. “And I want to thank the citizens of Sanger for their gracious support. I feel very blessed that they supported me in this election.”
Ontiveros received nearly 54 per- cent of the vote, just over 600 votes more than incumbent Mayor Frank Gonzalez, who received just over 46 percent of the vote.
Gonzalez was absent at Thursday’s city council meeting.
The citizens of Sanger did not, however, extend the Mayor’s term from two years to four years. In a resounding ‘no’ vote, nearly 65 per- cent of Sanger voters (5,013) said no

on the council. The only meeting that month is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec.
8.
Nerio-Guerrero and Huerta are the
two candidates vying to fill in the seat by Councilman Joey Morales, who is stepping down after more than 20 years on the council.
In the Dinuba Unified School Dis- trict Governing Board Area 4 race, incumbent Mary Helen Villareal was well ahead of challenger, Joe T. Rive- ra, Sr., by a 738-291 count.
For the Alta Irrigation District Director Division 4, Dominic Fino re- ceived 1,434 total votes while Marco Rinaldi had 543.
to Measure H, which would have ex- tended the mayor’s term in Sanger to four years.
Hurtado received nearly 61 per- cent of the vote in her bid for reelec- tion, beating challenger Fernando Lopez, Jr. to retain her seat. She was appointed to the council after her sis- ter Melissa Hurtado was elected to the State Senate in 2018.
Martinez received nearly double the votes of that of challenger Kevin Cart- er as the current Mayor Pro Tem re- ceived 1,839 votes (almost 66 percent) compared to just 949 votes for Carter.
Last week’s city council meeting came just two days after the general election.
In city council news, the council voted to approve several health care items that aim to bring medical cover- age and costs down for city workers, including cooperative agreement for health policy and management con- sulting services with the cities of Di- nuba, Kingsburg, Selma and Coalinga.
The council also approved a new medical and dental insurance plan for 2021 and to participate in the Me- di-Cal Intergovernmental Rate Range Program. The program allows the city of Sanger’s Fire Department to re- cover unreimbursed ambulance ser- vice costs provided to Medi-Cal Plan patients, which will equate to the re- covery of roughly $1.2 million in new Medi-Cal payments.
In the 26th State Assembly District race, incumbent Devon Mathis had over 54 percent of the vote at 73,966 and challenger, Drew Phillips, had 45.48 percent with 61,172 votes.
In the Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District Governing Board Area 1 race, incumbent Marisol Rubalcaba has 41.64 percent of the vote with 355 while another incumbent, Sarah Her- rera, trails Margie Salazar, 302 to 253. The area calls for two elected repre- sentatives.
In Area 4, Joni Jordan leads Tony Werner, 380-232. The seat is being va- cated by Lloyd McClard.
In the Orosi Public Utility Direc- tor Seat 4, Johnny Sandoval accumu- lated 641 votes while Chad Widman received 189 votes.
