Bill Beal
March 29, 1930 – June 25, 2020
It is with profound sadness that the family of Billy Ray Beal, or Señor Beal, of Reedley announces his peaceful passing at the age of 90. Bill was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, a plant enthusiast, a music lover and a dancer. He loved Reedley and will be greatly missed by all.
Bill was born in Slaton, Texas to Carl and Nellie
Beal, he also had an older brother Charles. Carl
passed away when Bill was two years-old, to make
ends meet Bill’s family home was turned into a boarding house. Growing up in this environment made him comfortable around people. Bill loved nothing more than meeting new people and holding lively conversations.
At Lubbock Tech Bill received an undergraduate degree in Business Management. During the summers, he worked for the local recreation center teaching dance and tumbling to children. Many of his students were hispanic, it was during this time that Bill developed a lifelong passion for the Spanish language. After serving during the Korean War for 18 months in the logistics division in Japan, Bill went back to University and earned his Masters Degree in Spanish.
In 1958, Bill moved to Reedley and started teaching Spanish. He soon met another teacher, Marilyn Knowles, whom he married in 1959. Bill adopted Marilyn’s two young daughters, Margaret and Elaine. They later had two more children, Brian and Jennifer. Bill and Marilyn divorced in 1971, he never remarried.
Bill loved teaching Spanish, and he was able to teach multiple generations. In 1967, Bill and his family moved to Peru for one year on a Fulbright grant where he taught English at the Cathloic University in Lima. He developed many friendships there and through these connections met Vicki Tello and her daughter Michelle Mexia.
Later, Bill became a host father to 24 international students from countries such as Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and Haiti. He loved being able to teach them English and watching them succeed in their studies. His students would eventually move back home to help their communities with the education they received.
One of Bill’s proudest accomplishments was starting the Reedley Folkloric Dance troupe which helped his students take pride in their heritage. His love of dance also led him to take a Break Dancing class in Fresno at 54. Bill also had a great passion for plants, he was a Master Gardener and volunteered at the Garden of the Sun in Fresno. For over a decade, he helped with an annual plant exchange and organized the Garden Tour to bene t The United Methodist church where he was an ardent and active member.
Bill is survived by his four children: Margaret Beal Knowles, Elaine Hassett, Brian Beal and Jennifer Everett; as well as ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Bill was always looking to grow his family, everyone was always welcome in his home. A private funeral service is being held soon and the family hopes to have a larger Celebration of Life when it is safer to do so.
Memorial donations may be made to Lucson’s Orphanage- When I Grow Up. Lucson was one of Bill’s host students. Online donations or checks can be written to When I Grow Up and write Haiti on the memo line. https://whenigrowup-global.com
