Kappa is based on a turtle, or as Judy Seki called it, “the grandfather to the Ninja Turtles.”
The reference was something those sitting on the floor could relate to immediately. “Kappa likes cucumbers,” Judy Seki said. “Ninja Turtles like?”
Her pause was rewarded with a resounding, “Pizza!”
“But there’s a message,” she said. “Joe thinks he has to change himself to be somebody else — into a millionaire. But Sugar knew the truth the whole time, and she still loves him.”
Braley said the relatively small cast — about 30 people as opposed to about 20 more for “Shrek” — meant a more intimate operation. “We’re small,” she said. “We’ve gotten really close because we spend so much time together. (And) everyone has been incredibly involved — with the set, helping people run their

Playing a gangster introduced Jacob Galindo to acting and, possibly, to a new passion. “I’m happy to be in my first show,” he said. “I should have done this earlier. My friend, Christian Reinke, said, ‘Just do it. It’s fun.’ And here I am, and I’m having a great time.”
The role is also the first for Eddie Viera, a senior who plays Sweet Sue’s assistant Bienstock. “She

Sanger High boys volleyball alumni event and dinner is planned for 5 to 7 p.m. March 17 in the gym. Matches will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
AMVETS will have its fish fry from 5 to 8 p.m. every Friday for most of the month, March 16 and 23. Cost is $10 and
includes rice, chowder, slaw, vegetable and bread. The club also has brought back its chili dogs from 5 to 8 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of the month. So that will be March 21 and April 4 and 18. Everybody who’s anybody will be there. Come early. It’s popular. There will also be kraut dogs, mustard dogs and Frito boats. He said he then wrote and illustrated his own stories, sometimes using one of their nine children to pose for photos that he used as guides for the art that appears in the books.
And the lucky cat, which appears in many Japanese homes in some form, has deep roots in Japanese culture, dating back centuries when cats were used to keep mice and rats from destroying silk work farms and to eliminate rodents in rice storage areas, Judy Seki said. And their luck arose from their roles.
“Hello Kitty is the granddaughter of the Lucky Cat,” she said.

Inside, Seki and his wife created a display of four of his books, the aforementioned “The Tale of the Lucky Cat,” “The Last Kappa of Old Japan,” “Yuko-Chan and the Daruma Doll” and “The Kokeshi Doll from Fukushima.”
“Today, I want to take everybody to old Japan without leaving Fresno (County),” Sunny Seki said.

between the first and second acts, she elaborated. “It’s a fun show,” she said. “We laugh all the time. Everybody does.”
Roberto Zamora, who plays a gangster and mechanic, said he had no idea what “Some Like It Hot” was all about until he got a role in the musical “Sugar.” “It’s very unique,” he said. “In its own way. I’m enjoying the play.”
Maddie Braley, who plays a band girl, said the show is light-hearted and hilarious.

“It takes about four years to publish a book,” Sunny said.
“It’s not easy writing books,” Judy said. “You need to accept rejection. (But) you don’t give up. You keep trying.”
Seki started by telling stories to his children, then decided to take those stories and write them into children’s books. His first attempts didn’t get past publishers, but he found success with the New Folktales from Old Japan series, making the legends his own and adding a “twist.” Then a promotional video featuring one of his children as the narrator and host found its way onto the Disney Channel, and sales accelerated.

She dropped her voice at that moment, going into character. Her high-pitched girl voice disappeared completely. She said she used her brothers, who are 18 and 24, as inspiration. “I’d never done anything like this,” she said, adding she took drama class “for fun.” “Chase encouraged metodoit.NowIwishI had done it earlier.”

presentation, a little girl named Adelaide Pope politely approached the author and handed him a gift she had made herself and signed with her name. He thanked her profusely and gave her a high five.
She left wearing a huge smile and possibly taking away a memory she won’t soon forget.
This was the 37th Young Authors’ Fair. Many other authors have come to John Wash to talk about their books. In fact, there have been so many that the school made T-shirts listing all their names way back to 1982. The shirt looks like it could have been sold at a concert featuring a popular band.

Williams, a senior, has accepted an academic offer by Sacramento State and expects to attend California State University branch in the fall.
