Velarde, Riverhounds blanked by Indy Eleven
MVT Staff Report
Reedley’s Anthony Ve- larde and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds were kept off the scoreboard by the host Indy Eleven on Aug. 15, dropping a 1-0 deci- sion in a United Soccer League match in India- napolis.
Indy Eleven collected a goal early in the first half, and made the score stand up while posting a 1-0 victory to drop Pitts- burgh to 4-3 on the sea- son. It also dropped the Riverhounds into second place in Group F play, three points behind Hart- ford Athletic.
Velarde, coming off the bench in recent matches as a midfielder, entered in the 71st min-
ute and helped Pitts- burgh put on in- creased offen- sive pressure
after manag- ing just
three shots on goal in the first half. The Hounds couldn’t get the equal- izer during the final 45 minutes and extra time, failing to convert on a penalty shot in the 50th minute, and just missing on a header attempt in the 88th minute.
Velarde, an All-Amer- ican for Fresno Pacific University after a record- setting career at Reedley High, remains tied for second on PIttsburgh’s season scoring list with three goals. He also has an assist, a block, an in- terception and two tack- les won.
The Riverhounds played Loudon Unit- ed in a road match at Leesburg,Va. on Aug. 19, then host Saint Louis FC in a Saturday, Aug. 22, USL home match. Start- ing time is 4 p.m. Califor- nia time.

Reedley High School’s football schedule for 2020- 2021 has been finalized, and the Pirates’ revamped historic season is slated to open on the road the first week of January 2021.
Reedley — which post- ed a 6-5 record and quali- fied for the Central Sec- tion Division 5 playoffs in 2019, Tony Gates’ first season as head coach — will kick off the campaign (assuming there are no COVID-19 interruptions) on Friday, Jan. 8, with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Han- ford West High School. Like all Central Section high schools, it’s the first football game to be played by the RHS program in the month of January. The 10-game regular sea- son runs from January through the third week of March. State conditions regarding the Coronavi- rus will determine if the live games will be played with fans in attendance. For now, that status is un- certain.
The Pirates have five home games scheduled at Sal Gonzalez Field, begin- ning with a 7:30 p.m. non- league matchup against Sierra Pacific High of
