needs to be learned from any- one wanting to work in law enforcement.
Rivera has been with the department for 18 years, and is part of the K9 unit.
“Leo [the K9] is ready to go at any moment,” he said of the department’s Belgain Malanois.
Rivera said during the winter months, officers are called to a number of distur- bances involving family.
“So the best way I can de- scribe it...” Rivera said as he began to form a sentence be- fore being interrupted by the police radio.
“Sam eleven,” said the dispatcher, “We have another domestic disturbance, this one involving two brothers, can I show you en route?”
Rivera responded, “Sam 11, en route.”
Officers are identified by numbers and names of areas they patrol.
“Okay, now back to the question, Rivera said, “I do be- lieve we see a spike in crime during the holidays.”
As he began to answer the second question while continu- ing to drive to the call, Rive- ra’s phone rang.
“I got the 9MM rounds, they’re in my patrol car,” the voice on the speaker phone said.
“Give me a couple min- utes,” Rivera replied to the person on the phone. “We’re tied up with calls right now, I’ll have to give you a call back.”
The phone call ended. “Look at this,” Rivera said. “How many things are hap- pening tonight, all at once, too.”
Rivera continued to drive toward the home where the call had been made, all the while scouring the nearby neighborhoods.
“We work from 7 p.m. and work until 7 a.m,” he said. “So we do have an overlap of of- ficers until 2 a.m. and that’s when the other three officers get to go home.”
The call for service Rivera was dispatched to was located in a neighborhood in the east- ern part of town. It involved a pair of brothers who had been arguing.
As officers arrived, the red and blue lights lit up the neighborhood — hiding all traces of the nearby flickering Christmas lights and decora- tions.
